New guy and build thread

Hey Fellas,

New owner here. I've been playing with Hondas since 1993 (still have a Type R) and wanted to try something new. I have always wanted a Porsche and finally pulled the trigger on an 81 Targa. It has a ton of miles and needs a lot of work, but that's what I was looking for. Here's a shot of the car the day it was picked up. It's not a 930, just a conversion.

I nuked the interior the next day. Re-carpeting the entire thing, RS door panels, deleting rear seats, new dash and and a couple Recaro SRD's being installed:

RS door panels installed. It's now carpeted, but it's black and the garage is too dark. I need to install the old seats so I can back it out of the garage for a couple pics:

That's it for now. I have a set of CCW's being manufactured right now, so hopefully that will be the next update.

Anybody in Riverside/Corona area?

Ryan

Something like this?

Nice choice of car, and wheels too.
BTW, where in SCal? See you around.

That car looks like a really fun project. You did really well on your first Porsche.

It is impressive that you removed the interior already and replaced the carpet. With a work ethic like yours, that car will be a show-winner in no time.

Welcome to your next addiction.

Yes, something like that. Went with high polished lip and gold centers (17" Classic)

I live in Corona and spend a lot of time in OC.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Any thoughts on the Targa bar? It's stainless, but painted black and chipping. I might just strip it and go with the stainless look.

Personally I'm a fan of the black look. I've seen some posts around here on re-painting your targa bar. Its not hard and it looks good afterwards.

If the Targa bar weren't chipping, I would suggest Back to Black, as it made a 1000% improvement to my dull bar. As said above, there are many great posts on how to even repaint it while on the car, which I will do once the driving season wraps up.

Small update: Replaced amber bumper lenses with clear. I think it's a nice look on dark 911's. Ordered Wedge brackets and sliders, but Im still tracking down a set of Recaro's. Had a friend detail her today and realized I have a lot of trim pieces that need to be either restored (possible?) or replaced. Quite a few rock chips, too. I might have him back to color sand it. Pulling the targa bar off this afternoon and will be powdercoating flat black this week. I have a coating booth at work, which is awesome.

Targa bar came off pretty easily. Didn't even have to pull the wheels off to get to the two 10mm nuts on each side. I used a basic aircraft stripper from home depot and only managed to get it on my skin 10 times

Bling bling

I also pulled off the two metal pieces on the top of the front windshid (inside) where the targa bar mounts, as they were chipping. They will be flat black, as well.

The dash is the next big project. I'm still unsure about trying to remove and re-install the front glass myself or just hiring a professional. Any thoughts?

If you have ever replaced glass on an older car using the rope method it is relatively easy. My car arrived with the windshield in the back seat, so I had no choice but to install it. Went exactly as described in the manual and in many threads here at Pelican. I'd say go for it.
Use a new OEM seal when you do it.

Credit card was charged for wheels today, so I am assuming they are complete.

What do you guys think of the standard 930 rockers versus the boxed version I have? For whatever reason I just don't dig the boxed rockers. I might try to find a regular 930 set.

Couple updates:

wheels are complete

Also tracked down a set of Recaro SRD's. Swooping them up tomorrow night.

And finally I think I am going to ditch the boxed rockers. Need to track down a pair of 930 rockers.

Ryan
