What's Wrong With This Picture?
Aside from the fact that I have painter's tape in a place where I will have the S-hose hooked up.
![]() How do you like that oil cooler?! I had to do something to fill in the void in the engine bay left by removing the oil cooler for a 993 oil filter housing. Instead of spending a lot of time cutting sheetmetal and/or using foil tape, both of which would most likely look like crap anyway, based on my terrible sheetmetal fab skills, I decided to get out my favorite machining tool- the sawzall reciprocating saw..... ![]() Took a few quick measurements then cut through that sucker in less than a minute. Cleaned up the edges with a file and bing bang boom done. I love it!!! That $30 junk oil cooler donated from Eagledriver/Andy Simpkinson is some of the best money i've spent on my most recent engine rebuild. Thanks again Andy! ![]() No that's not a Campbell's soup can hanging off the engine...... It's a Canton Racing Products 25-184 full flow filter with replaceable filter element.

![]() ![]() The purpose of engine perimeter sheetmetal is to keep the exhaust heat from being sucked into the cooling fan and intake air horn. I think a simple flat piece of metal with some tabs at the correct places would serve your needs better. I would use a cardboard cereal box to make a pattern, then transfer it to sheet aluminum or steel available at Home Depot or most local hardware stores. Not too hard to do, really. Just my 2 cents. Well at first I was going to "skin" the oil cooler and steal the aluminum cladding from it. But that was too much work. It was much easier to just cut up the entire cooler body. Like Dave said, it was a leaker so no animals were harmed during this movie (no harm done to a good used *expensive* cooler). Andy had already once used Pacific Oil Cooler to service it, and it developed a leak after that. So it was shelved.
The other reason I used the cooler body is because I had already murdered it for its oil pump supply tube. The supply tube was the original intent of cutting up a cooler. I had never intended to use the cooler for its role in the fan cooling plumbing. I agree some cardboard templates will get me what I need. I did just that to create a flat piece on the side of #6 cyl. head, fastened to the triangular cam bore M6 holes, to contain the airflow on that head. But keep in mind that the top region of the cooler already has the perfect shape to it that blends in perfectly with: >the fan shroud, which I blocked off the fan air supply to the cooler with high temp fiber reinforced foil tape. I normally use this for taping wheel weights on >the engine case >the sheetmetal surrounds for teh engine bay- there's blind nuts in the cooler to make a clean, solid attachment >the #6 spark plug From the top of the engine, it looks perfect. On the bottom it's sorta hokey because i've got the cooler matrix exposed, an oil filter dangling there, and the oil pump tube sticking out of the case supported by a clamp bolted to the cam tower. But it's sturdy. I'm certainly not endorsing that people should go cutting up coolers to do this. I just so happened to have one that was no longer functional for oil cooling so I made good use of it!

Here's what originally prompted the merciless destruction of the poor 'ol oil cooler. I wanted to add a filter housing to the engine and I didn't want to change out the rubber "S" hose for AN hose fittings on the tank and engine case. I'll do that when I relocate the tank with a Peterson tank.
