Front end play/shimmy - Ball joint?

Hi guys,

I've had this front end shimmy at 70mp and up. (85 Carrera) May be just wheel balance, but while inspecting the front end I saw both tie rod end boots were torn. I replaced both outer tie rod ends, and also re-tightened the front bearings (removed the nut, popped out the outer bearing, inspected races, re-packed and re-tightened).

Took the car for a drive before getting front end aligned and still have the shimmy. Jacked it up and the left wheel seems tight, but on the right I can still wiggle it (very small amount of play) when I grab the wheel at 12:00 and 6:00. Could this be the ball joint on this side?

If so - I've never done one before - maybe you guys can help me figure out if that's the issue...then point me to some instructions on doing the job.

As always, thanks!

Mark.

Very possible, but It will be easier to determine if you visually look at the ball joint while an assistant shakes the wheel.also have a look at the tires for any uneven wear, spin the tire while observing the tread and look for a choppy or uneven surface that may be giving you the vibration symptoms you are experiencing.
