still need a little more clarification so bear with me please....i am looking at the purchase of a motor, can anyone help with the id?do targas have different numbers from coupe? i know sportos do etc.
the stamped number on the case is 6117***...is this a targa or coupe block ?
i see 2 different references and of course they differ.

for a 1971 911T the engine could be one of 4 different types, and totally independent of body type. Basically either USA or ROW (Rest Of World), and manual or sportomatic; so two versions for each market. Any of the four types could be in a coupe, a Targa or a Karmann coupe; the body type does not matter.

According to my reference, you will not be able to tell from the engine number is the block was specific to a coupe or a targa as both body styles used engines from the same number range.

how would you be able to to tell if a block was within the range of the build on a certain car..did porsche put casting dates on blocks..the block i am looking at numerically has a 300 or so difference from my block (later/larger numbering). could/would it still be correct for my car? thanks , ben

probably be easier to track if you had the 2 threads about the same thing in just one thread...Just sayin...if the highest number is 6118119 and yours is 6117**** doesn't it make sense that it is in your series ?

maybe easier to try the old thread but i opened this one..also let me edit and add asterisk and not @#$ so not to offend.
wouldn't the block with the higher number be built after the block with the lower number...are there casting numbers located on the blockthat would be cross reference to the vin?

There are no casting references to particular body vin's. The best you could hope for is getting a COA from Porsche based on the car's vin and hope it comes with the engine number and even then it may not be accurate.
