Early Targa Mystery
Ok, I know I'm the idiot, but I cannot make my Targa top fit in the trunk without folding it. Several times I have heard that it can be done with the early cars (no brake booster) but I'll be damned if I can figure it out.
For those who can do it, does your car still have the cover over the wiper motor etc? Thanks, David

You have to tilt it sideways with the upper part on top of the fuse box... at least it works for me.

The top, without folding, will also fit behind the seats.

Don't worry, I couldn't figure it out either, but it turned out to be possible afterall. My 76 has no brake booster, but has the covers/carpets etc. If I slot the roof's one end below the front latch panel it fits in (Obviously it isn't an issue with longhoods, but a bit of a pain with shorthoods.)
IIRC, when facing the trunk with the roof's front edge on your left and the rear edge on your right, it just about clears the fusebox. Can attach a pic later if it doesn't make sense. Haven't folded my top since figuring it out! Last edited by Bear911; 08-21-2012 at 06:24 AM.. |

I would love a pic if you don't mind. I wonder if this applies to longhoods?

My top fit unfolded in my longhood.

Here you go... Proof that a stock non-boostered shorthood targa can take a top unfolded in the front with a bit of maneuvering. I'm sure longhoods require less effort. Sorry about the dodgy pic.

I have a rod across the trunk (body stiffener?) which prevents me from putting my top in unfolded. I can, however, put it in partially folded.

Sorry, but will it also fit in a long hood? I have a 72. I know it sounds like a stupid question but has anyone put one in a longhood?

The only difference is that the longhood's latch panel is further foward and lower, ie less of an issue.

Ok - I just tried for the last 30 minutes to no avail. The car is a 72T, and it did have dealer added A/C, which has since been removed. I can't see anything that is non stock. Anyone? Bueller?
The front/leading edge of the top is to the left. It sits on top of the cardboard wiper cover, and consequently will not allow the trunk lid to close. ![]() The drivers side of the top bumps in to the back side of the latch assembly mount (has circular access hole) ![]() This cross-support for the trunk hits the top of the targa top. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Does this look stock? I will say it took a reprop stock carpet kit no problem. ![]() ![]() What the heck am I missing???

I cannot put the top unfolded in my car as well. The windshield washer tank in the upper section of the trunk prevents it from fitting.
I do not worry, just fold and go. I figure every 15+ years I'll recover it. |

Ok - I agree with that. It's just that so many say it CAN be done!

What happens when you turn it over? I seem to remember it going in upside down with arms released. It's been a while though.

Upside down is much worse.
With the bars unlocked, Sammy, I can get it in just about any way. Either my car is not stock or it's just not possible. I could remove the water bottle, but it's the latch support that it hits. The short hood cars must have a different wiper motor cover. NBD really - just wanted to see if it was possible. I am still trying to make sense of Timmy2's success???

David, have you tried to rotate it ? front edge towards the fuse box.

Yep - same problem. The upward curve of the top hit the bottom of the hood.

Wow, that's really weird. In your pic the roof is positioned all the way to the left. I assume you have tried it exactly in the centre of the trunk, equidistant between the two hood hinges?
If you compare our pictures, I am definitely able to get it lower down in the shorthood, especially if you compare the distance between roof and fresh air vent. Unless one of the stock longhood owners can post a pic, I guess we are %^*# outta luck. On a side note, how about a pic of the car? You are teasing us with the close-ups :-)

I tried it flushed right, centered and flushed left. The problem is in the center where the top hits the hood support.
Tease?
