sc stalls then will not restart any answers?

Hi my 1982 sc stall sometimes at idle and will not restart, the only way to restart it is to open the hood take off the air cleaner cover reach up in and manual prime or give it a shot of fuel by lifting the plate, (with the key on) anyone had this problem, i think the alternator is going out could this be the cause? Kevin

This sounds more like a fuel problem (only restart with fuel) I would think the accumulator or check valve. I had the same symtems in mine. But the stalling part really isn't a symtem so that sounds like charging, (Altenator or Regulator)

When it is running take it to a Battery shop, here in Canada most of them will hook up the car and test the charging system (battery, Regulator, and altenator) for FREE!!! At least that tell you where to start

Good Luck

Shawn

I have been pulling my hair out with the same problem, mine happenend all of a sudden, try disconnecting the ECU and relay, (under your right seat).

I did this and the car started right up, didn't run well but started up, which told me it was something electrical.

My first instinct was check valve and acumulator, till I tried this.

Let me know what happens, I'm in the process of checking the components in that circuitry to find ourt which one caused it.

why do you think your altenator is bad ? when it does start who is your idle ? after your car warms up is it OK ? have you checked to make sure that your warm up regulator and aux air valve is connected ? could be your fuel accumalator

The headlights are flikering, so i feel that i am having a charging problem, the battey never seems to be fully charged, before i put the car away last fall it would do the same thing all the suuden just quit for no reason and would start if i primmed it by lifting the throttle plate, it would start, its seems electrical like a switch is not opening to prime the car or maybe the fuel pump quits running for a second, does the could start valve work every time you start the car, it seems it wouldnt, so i feel its the fuel pump or the relay maybe stopping for a second and loose prime or what if it totaly quit charging for a sec and shut the fuel pump off would this cause it to loose prime, what ever it is, i cant seem to figure it out and the mechanic cant get it to do it, Kevin

Have you tried switching relays for the fuel pump? Make sure that the fuel pump itself is getting 12 volts at all times. If these don't remedy the situation, then check fuel pressure. When was the last time the fuel filter and accumulator were checked/replaced? I agree that it seems to be fuel related from the info that you have given us.

Kevin,

My car has the exact same problem, you are not the only one.

I changed the accumulator which only improved this abit.

I had the alternator rebuilt, but I still have the same problem. My lights fliker and go dim.

I got a new battery and i still have the same problem.

I have a gut feeling its an electrical problem

I will get mine checked by an electrician, and I will get back to you if I solve my problem.
