Points about Points...or Check the Easy Stuff First!
I haven't been driving the car as much as usual lately, but I noticed recently that it was getting harder to start, seemed sluggish, and was running hotter than usual.
At first I thought maybe I had a recurrence of my WUR issues from a few years ago. Or maybe the engine was just getting tired. Or maybe (worst of all) Gunter had sneaked into my garage @ night and had sabotaged my car since my engine compartment was so dirty! I mentioned to my long suffering Significant Other (Saint Lesley) that maybe I needed to change my points. Sure enough, next day came popping, banging and tach bouncing--all signs of points not opening. Changed the points, set the dwell to 36, and I now, once again, have a sweet running engine! Easy starting, quick right off idle to redline, and cool running. Looking forward to a nice drive this long weekend. I'm making sure I lock my garage, though, just in case... BTW I may eventually go the Pertronix route. It's just that I've probably got half a dozen sets of points to use up first.
