High Idle Help
I'm continuing an new old thread I started a week ago. Problem still is after bebuild the motor will not idle at less than 1500rpm. Tried idle mixture, air correction, disconnecting the press rods, the idle screws are backed right off. If it is timing am I too far advanced or retarded. The motor is an 2.0L "E" but with webers. Should I be looking at a different static timing setting than the TDC specified in the books. Do the carbs make a difference. I might deduce that because the fuel isn't pressure fed I should give it more time to enter the cylinder. Therefore I should retard the timing maybe "After TDC" The distributor seems to be working and advancing to 30-35'BTDC as I increase revs. Any thoughts.

Where's the timing at 1500 rpm? How about at 6000 rpm? Is this the OEM distributor for your car? Are you certain that it was working before the rebuild? Is there a vacuum box on the distributor, and if so, how's it connected? Try retarding the timing a bit to get the idle speed down to 900-950 rpm. Then check for max advance at 6000 rpm to see if you are within spec. As far as the carbs go, what condition are they in? How were they working before the rebuild? Did you do anything to them, i.e. rebuild, disassembly, cleaning? If the throttle plates aren't closing all the way, i.e., binding, then you could get a fast idle. Lots of variables here-- hard to answer without more info.

John Yep, lots of variables, I did do a full rebuild on the carbs so I'm confident in them. I haven't had the revs up to 6000 as I've only done about 60 miles since the rebuild. When I first got it running 2-3 weeks ago it was idling at 700-800 and the timing was at 5'BTDC. Since then the idle has crept up,(maybe as the rings bed in and create more compression?). The distributor has only a mechanical advance, no vacuum. It's a Bosch. Unless you have any other insights I think I'll try to retard it a bit and see what happens. I haven't put the light back on it at 1500 rpm just double checked the static.
