So I've run into a bit of trouble. I couldn't get the console all the way off, but I got it up and over the shifter, and took the shifter out. I replaced the ball-cup bushing, and the shaft collar bushing... but how do you put all this back together?

It seems like I need to get the ball-cup bushing seated into the end of the shift linkage, while at the same time, getting the shaft collar bushing mount oriented in the right spot. Is there a trick for doing this both at the same time? Because when I try to get the cup bushing in, the shaft bushing mount usually flips downwards, but if I get that lined up, I can't get the cup bushing into the linkage.

What is the trick?

So how do I tell what kind of front shocks I have? After driving a few more tanks, the original ones just gave up and I'm getting a lot of flubbery feel whenever I hit a bump.

Can you elaborate on flubbery? Remember that the torsion bars are there in place of typical car springs and they need to twist first, which isn't that easy. The shocks control the compression and recoil. Are you sure your T-bars are good and not broken...which has happened before.

You also need to identify the strut housing that the shock sits in. That will let you narrow down what shock choices you have. Suggest posting a picture of the control arm showing the strut connection. Do you see any paint color on the shock tube? Sometimes a hint as well.

Torsion bars are fine, I just adjusted them. The problem is the shocks are not controlling the compression/rebound anymore, they're just feeling really loose whenever I hit imperfections. How do you identify what you have? I can take pics tonight, I just didn't know if maybe all 77s had X or whatever.

It could be corner balance. When you adjust tbars did you do all 4 corners? You may have upset the corner balance and that will give you flubbery handling real quick. As far as the specifics of what struts were used for what years, you will need to hear from some of the middie guys to give you better direction. At least two different types were used.

Is there a pin at the bottom of the strut? If yes, green Bilsteins, if not, probably black Boges. Could also be red Konis...
have you checked your upper strut bushings and ball joints, tie rods etc.
You adjusted your torsion bars, did you set alignment and have it corner balanced?
If the weight transfer has changed it may feel like something is wrong.

Another mid year fan, found this 77 in Milwaukee in July of 13. Purchased her as a no worries go anywhere fun car and started sorted things out. Here are a few current pictures
