Help identifying wiring connector

I had a small electrical fire in the hood which I traced to this connector. Does anyone know where I can find this part? At first, it looks like a simple connector, but there's something else inside which I can't make out which leads me to believe does more.

BTW, the wires (white/brown) seems to provide power to the courtesy lights because when I apply 12V to (#1 in bottom pic), the hood light iluminates. My interior and glove box lights do not work but radio does (eliminates fuse #4 problem), but I'm hoping when I replace the connector, all is well again.

The connector joins to their respective #1 and #2 label as shown.

Thanks.

Can someone put a volt meter and let me know if there's any at rest voltages between both sides of the terminals? Or can someone take a pic of their connector? I'm wondering if I should just simply connect both wires (#1 and #2) together and be done.

Thanks for your time.

Hi David -

I don't have my car with me, but I can take a look tonite. That connector may be a diode, not sure if Porsche used any of these.

I would go slow with regards to re-connecting, since you may have a short somewhere and you don't want to burn up any other (possibly un-accessable) wires while you debug.

A couple suggestions, one is to use your Ohm-meter to check the resistance of circuits. By this, I mean if you are about to connect a 12v power source to another wire, you can first check that wire for shorts by measuring it's resistance. If you connect power to a circuit with less than one Ohm resistance, you suddenly have more than 12 Amps on the circuit.

Another one is to make suspect connections using an-inline fuse with low value, ie 5 amps. If there IS a short, then the fuse will blow before any wires melt.

Do you have the wiring diagrams for your car? These may help also.

Best,
Chuck.H

Thanks Chuck for the offer. If you can locate a part number on the connector, that would be great. Looking closely at the pic, there seems to be part of a part #.

I have wiring diagrams from Pelican. It doesn't show much about the connector Unless what's on the right of the label "VI 9" (upper right in first picture) is in fact a diode?

Diode.

Your part appears to be a diode P/N 911.617.108.00

I'll have a look at my factory manual for a location/application.

Here's a pic:

Good luck,

Gerry

Be sure you get the polarity correct when you replace the holder.

Were it not fried, you could just replace the diode........

pm me as needed.

Any idea what caused it to explode? Either the diode went bad, or there was too much current thru it... so the next one you put in may pop also if you have a problem in one of it's attached circuits.

Good point, place a current meter in series with the two wires & measure
the current draw.

If It's only for the courtesy lights, the draw should not exceed 500ma.

My '86 factory schematic does not show a diode in the courtesy lights CKT.

Basically, the diode was a result of collateral damage...One of the wires that monitors the brake lining got pinched somehow when the hood was closed and that caused a fire which melted the diode.

btw, did I mention how invaluable the Pelican Community is?

So, part is NLA...looks like I may have to swap w/ a more current setup. Anyone have any clue what the specs are for this diode and direction of polarity?

Thanks, I see the polarity from "my little friend" above. Now to find a source.

Try Blackbyrd on used parts.
