New to the site. Just picked up this 911 -a few new pics

I just picked up this 1976 Targa. I bought it from my girlfriends uncle who got it when his father passed away. He didn't have much interest in the car and once things started to go he parked it (a little over a year ago). I don't have much info on the car other then a estimate from a shop right before he parked it.
When I picked it up. Dead battery, fuel leak and flat tires...

inside

in my garage

Seems to be a fitment issue

Ok so how do I confirm what engine is in it? The Odometer reads 215K miles.
Also, I charged battery and turned key... Fuel pump gets power with key on. Is that normal? I killed is asap when I smelled a fuel leak from front of car.

Thanks for looking.

Nice, post where you are located, at least the state. You might get some locals who would be willing to stop by and give you some pointers.

Good on you, man. I'm sure your girlfriend's uncle's dad would be glad that his car is going to be back on the road again. Good luck, there's lots of good people on this forum with a lot of knowledge to share with you.

Fuel leak

First things first.

Last thing you need is a fire.

Is the fuel leak up front between the wheels? May just be a rubber hose or connection at the fuel pump.

Do you have a way to get it up on stands.

Any history on the motor regarding rebuild. If it's a 2.7 with over 200K on it. I would think that it might have had studs pulling by now.

Congrats. This board will give you the knowledge and confidence to make that car a fun driver. If you feel like you are in over your head let me know - I am in the market for a targa project.

H4 headlamps and upgraded fan (from yucky five blade). Paint should polish out. Good dash. Should be a 2.7 - can't see all of it and I'm assuming the fan was upgraded which is a good thing. Looks like nice leather inside.

Fix the fuel leaks first...

Looks like a nice car!

That's cool! Great car! I wish you good luck and many fun miles. If you ever do a road trip up to Colorado, there's a few of us here that would love to show you some great roads.

Cheers,

Thanks for the replies. I'm in the Phoenix, AZ area and as far as I know the car has been an Arizona car most of it's life. Rust free! I did get under the car and found the fuel leak is a hose at the fuel pump. Hoses are dry cracking.
I'm ready to get this back on the road. Growing up my dad had a few Porsches. 86 944 turbo, 81 928, and now a boxster.
I feel confident with some help from this forum I'll have it running in no time. I was an Audi technician and now work for an aerospace company. I'm dying to put my tools back to work.

Nice! You'll be right at home in your 911 then. It's funny, I found my dad a pristine 86 944 Turbo with phone dials!

I hope you love the car...I'm sure you will.

You'll find an engine type number (911/xx) and serial number stamped in the engine case near the bottom right of the cooling fan. It will take a little looking with a flashlight to find it. Look behind the sending unit that is down there. That will tell you what the engine was originally and what year it was built. If it's the original engine for that car, it should have been rebuilt by now, as it wouldn't have made that many miles without major problems, so it may not be stock. Hopefully, the entire exhaust system will have been replaced, at a minimum, as the stock system caused the engine to run really hot.

If you shoot some more pictures and let us know what numbers you find, we can probably tell you more about it.

11 blade fan indicates someone did some engine changes. It still has the belt driven smog pump on the left side of the engine. The engine number, per Javadog on the right support post for the engine fan, will give useful information. Also on the bottom of the engine is the engine casting number, which for a 2.7 magnesium engine ends in 7R. Take photos underneath so we can see if you still have the dreaded Thermal Reactors that came with the smog pump and associated air lines to the exhaust ports. The engine lid should say 911S rather than Targa since that was the only US model 911 in 1976. Euro model? Good luck with this classic rust free car.

Good find and hope it brings you many years of happy motoring... Are your plans limited to getting it back running, or are you planning on any mods/upgrades, aesthetics? BTW, the rear deck lid does in fact have the 911S plaque.

once the safety issues are addressed, you can move on to other long term maintenance (use those terms to search up that thread), and then customize the car for your use

good luck and post some pics of your awd toy...

Thanks for all the helpful information. I already can tell this site will be one of my best resources.
My plans are to get the car safe and drivable for now. I plan on keeping in for a while so I'll mod to my liking as time goes on. When I can afford it I'd like to put in an updated engine. We'll see how long that takes lol
