My build thread
Okay, it's official. After building a couple dozen muscle, sports, and classic cars, I've caught the Porsche bug bad!
My wife is at her high school reunion and left her shopping money in the safe. I got bored and found this sweet little 1984 carrera for sale. When she finds out, I'm blaming you guys. Two owner 111,000 miles. Runs great, but nothing has been done to it. No valve adjustment, no new clutch, no new paint, just regular oil changes and preventive maintenance. However, its' never seen rain (until today) or snow, the paint is excellent (one tiny door dink with slight dent). Suspension squeaks, but is solid and it handles great. Engine starts right up, but often sticks at about 1500 rpm. No biggy and I got it cheap. Almost too cheap to cut it up, but it needs some TLC. I have a 50,000 mile 1995 3.6L engine and lots of other thoughts, but what would you do? Here are some pics: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...F942C975C4.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...F94F631193.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...F9557C767A.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...F94A7FDFEA.jpg Here's her sister: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ps277ced4d.jpg |
Looks like fun!
|
I hope you have a good divorce attorney! :D
Seriously, both are very nice looking machines. Have fun with the 84 and watch out for that slippery slope...!;) Oh BTW you need to update your sig! |
You could keep it bone stock and sell me your 95 3.6 ...
If it ever takes up too much room, feel free to let me know ! Cheers ! Phil |
Nice, why can't I ever find things like this.
Theoretically, it is rain but in actuality it's no different than a good car wash since you really didn't drive it in the rain. |
You are brave man Mark - you had better make up a good story before the wife gets home. Telling her that you brought it as a project for her, always works for a while - that is until you start down the slippery slope.
I'm looking forward to seeing how this progresses - keep us posted. Richard. |
It seems her flight from St. Louis back to Philly was cancelled and she won't be back until Wednesday. I was so sad, I ordered up a bunch of fiberglass today. If I don't post again after Wednesday evening, you'll know why...

lol
LOL thats great..

Nice car! Looks familiar, though yours is in better shape...
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...eraTrailer.jpg If it were my car I'd go one of two ways: Put the 3.6 in it and leave the rest alone to have a nice sleeper hot rod. Or, drive the 3.2 until it dies and then put the 3.6 in it to make the hot rod. I don't think you can lose either way. |
|
The power went out last night at 10:00, so I went to bed. I was lying there thinking about my build and had a big idea (apparently I think better in the dark, with the power out, and my wife out of the house - go figure). Anyway, I ordered up fiberglass flairs with the intention of triming the steel fenders/quarter panels and bonding the flairs on with Norton 04617. It works great and is stronger than the steel. Also, it bonds best to a primed steel surface, so you don't get trapped moisture that rusts over time.
As I was lying there, I realized two things: 1. The 11" rear and 9" front flairs are 930 dimensions and probably available in steel (Yes, our host carries them - ordered). 2. If I take the bumpers and engine lid off the car now, when my wife finally gets home tomorrow, the car will look less perfect and more like a rescue. She takes pity on rescues. For those who suggested I call it her car, that doesn't work with Andrea. I recently sold three projects (still have the 1966 Mustang fastback in the other garage) and she's too smart for that approach. Off to the garage to strip the "rescue". Sometimes I am brilliant...pictures to follow. |
She'll never accept this as needing any additional investment:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...DE755481ED.jpg However, after a few hours work (I got to get a better camera): http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...DE9ED899CF.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...DE97385466.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...DE90034BDF.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...DE7FE4DDD5.jpg Definitely looks like it needs a home and some attention. This way, when all the boxes start showing up next week while I'm at work, she'll know they are going towards a good cause. Now to go post some parts for sale. |
Freaking priceless. You are either very very brave, or very very stupid. I hope she doesn't ever discover Pelican. Do you have a will?
|
The irony of my will is that all my cars go to my brother.
|
Well, I'm back and I survived. She always takes things in stride and is usually a good sport. I showed her this video and even though I am building an IROC car, the RSR is close enough. I thought it would help, but her response was, "Don't expect me to ride in it if you're going to drive like that." My plan is working:
Porsche 911 RSR - YouTube Nothing new to report that pictures will help. I pressure washed the undercarriage of the car and got a ton of gunk off of it. My steel flares showed up, so I'll weld those on next weekend. I'm expecting the fiberglass bumpers and tail to show up this week. I'll need the bumpers to align the new flares. I also worked out my bumper mounting system. Turns out that 1 3/4", 16 ga exhaust tubing bolts right into the stock bumper shock mounts and 1 7/8" tubing slips snuggly over the smaller tubes. I'm going to mount the smaller tubes and weld up a bar connecting a larger tube on each side. I'll then glass the bar into the bumper to strengthen the bumper and give me a solid mounting system for front and rear bumpers. A couple of bolts with u-nuts on the side flange to fender/quarter panel and it will be solid. I also ordered my front and wheel well oil coolers. I'll going with 16AN connectors throughout. My biggest ah-ha however, is with the engine. The 3.2L has 133k on it and is solid, but needs a reseal. I wanted to upgrade it with cams, dual plug heads, and 3.5L piston/cylinders. When I added it all up, I realized that my buddy's 3.6L 993 engine is a much cheaper alternative, even with the new intake system planned. So, I'll be puting the 3.2L up for sale here shortly, just want to perform a leakdown test and make sure I have testing to back up my claims of a solid engine. I'll post pictures and document my progress as the real work begins. |
Nice car, can't wait to see everything you've got in planned for it. Keep the pics coming!
|
Mark
back date it!....no IROC...look at some of Magnus's stuff...back date or RS with the 3.6! |
I'm gearing up for the weekend. I'm going to try to get the rear bumper mounted and the rear 11" flares welded up. Now I understand my brother and sister-in-law are coming for the weekend. Their not connected, but my wife would LOVE to see that hook up happen. She's really hot, but it ain't going to happen.
Anyway, here are a few inspiration pictures for the weekend: http://chivethethrottle.files.wordpr...pg?w=500&h=333 http://chivethethrottle.files.wordpr...pg?w=500&h=332 http://chivethethrottle.files.wordpr...pg?w=500&h=335 |
I also sold my last muscle car today. It will be sad to see it leave...but...it will fund my engine build!!!! Yea!!!! Here's the ebay link:

Finally got a chance to work on the Porsche. Tried on Saturday, but the guy who bought the Mustang was supposed to have it picked up and first the battery died, then the starter went out! Spent all of Saturday replacing the battery and starter, then packing it up.
Anyway, I decided to start with the front bumper. The Rennspeed fiberglass is nice and comes with 8mm studs bonded into the bumper. I found that 16ga aluminumized exhaust tubing is a perfect mounting system. A piece of 1 3/4" slips snuggly inside of a piece of 1 7/8", all available at Pep Boys for less than $10.00. The 1 7/8" fits like this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...CC63895ECB.jpg And the 1 3/4" slips inside: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...CC6842A33C.jpg But you need to mount them to the car and bumper, so I cut 1 7/8" circles: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...CC6C9E0F0C.jpg opened up the pilot hole and inserted a couple of bolts: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...CC714C80BB.jpg I welded the bolt heads to the washers I made and than trimmed the 1 7/8" tubing and welded the stud into the end of the tube: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...CC7DD8D13E.jpg It helps to have a good welder (yes, I know the nozzle is missing, I just changed over to .024 wire): http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...CC77176892.jpg For the bumper side, I welded a flange to the end of the tube after trimming it to the same angle as the bumper shock. I elongated the holes to provide some adjustment, but then discovered that the tubes on the car are 36 1/2" inches apart and the studs bonded into the bumper are only kinda close. Good thing I only tacked the flanges on. Once I repositioned the mounting flange I was good to go. |
First trial fitting and it was too low:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...CEA0450E68.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...CEA9065782.jpg I later discovered I could reach through the parking light holes to adjust it. After checking clearances, I found the a/c condensor guard was holding the bumper too low: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...CCE24D8833.jpg Just took a few minutes to remove. All of it will come out once I get going. Right now, just fitting everything up to make sure it will all fit properly. I got to get some wider fenders. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...CCD28A415E.jpg Trial fit of the steel fender flares looks good: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...CCD9838061.jpg After a couple of adjustments, it is looking perfect: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...CCF08264C0.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...CCEAA61954.jpg I hope to get more time during the week. Otherwise next weekend we are heading to Texas for Thanksgiving. |
Got back this morning at 2:00 a.m. Thanks Southwest. Our flight was delayed from San Anonio to Nashville, but we made up some time in the air. Once in Nashville, we were delayed again, but in typical Southwest fashion the pilot hotrodded it out to the runway and then just as we were set to takeoff, he turned the plane around and announced that we had forgotten someones motorized wheelchair and had to go back to get it! It was frustrating, but then so is not having your motorized wheelchair. I was surprised that the baggage dude met us half way and they had it on the plane in about 5 minutes.
So today, Scott came over and we dropped the 3.2. The saying goes, "Make a plan and then triple the time." That was pretty much it. We figured an hour, but this engine had never been out, so three hours later it looked like this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...5F58D49779.jpg Empty, but much easier to work on: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...5F5E77D38D.jpg Scott is celebrating, but I was much happier when we had the engine loaded into his wife's SUV! Tomorrow I pick up my 3.6 and then continue stripping the car down. I just love my time working on the car! |
Oh look what I found!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...DA825CDA65.jpg Low mileage 1995 993 3.6. Soon to have PMO efi and ssi exhaust. Should be a badass! Now if work would stop getting in the way... |
I will be following this thread closely. Awesome stuff going on. Wives and fiances just have to understand our passion. I bought my 911 2 days before my fiances birthday. I think she thought I was getting her a car, but she understood. Now she loves riding around in it.

Last night I cleaned up the engine a bit, stripped out the wiring I don't need in the engine harness, removed the air pump and plugged the ports. I need to brace the flywheel flange so I can remove the crank pulley, a/c bracket, and belt sensor. I also have to remove the fan and replace the bearing with a fixed pulley.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...731B76EEB3.jpg This morning I removed everything else in the engine bay, except the fuel lines as I was worried about breaking the line (any clues on how to disconnect them where they come out of the tunnel?). I even got the sound deadener pad out intact and can reuse it. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...73004D0302.jpg I also removed the reflector panel. What a nightmare! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...73061CD4EE.jpg Anyone interested in an oil cooler and lines? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...730B0CE678.jpg Flares were next. Just mocked this one up, but they fit pretty well and should butt weld right into place. Tomorrow I'll fit the rear bumper and then get serious about cutting the old flares out and welding in the new. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...7316AFA9FE.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...73112852AF.jpg All in all, a damn good day, but I really need to get a better camera! |

Awesome work and great thread.

Had a good day today...and...got a new iphone 5 with a much better camera!
I measured, measured, measured, cut, fit, fit, fit, and welded the left rear quarter into place and it looks awesome (I'm a bit biased). There's no turning back now: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...1F78EB1306.jpg Fit up the flare: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...1F6089A53C.jpg And all welded into place. Just some grinding, hammer work, and a touch of filler to go, but I move to the right one tomorrow: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...1F526A8E06.jpg Here's what half of awesome looks like! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...1F3E498DE8.jpg More tomorrow. |
I only got a few hours today to work, before my daughter had to go home. So, I focused on welding the other side up:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...5466ABDC5E.jpg It's starting to look like it is supposed to look: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...5454759EF1.jpg A day with the grinder, hammer, and dolly and I'll have the rear flares shaped properly and matched to the rear valance. This crap is a lot of fun! |
cool

I'm enjoying your thread Mark
|
Very inspirational - you rock, man! Keep up the great work!!!
|
Good stuff. Too many horses and too few Porsches out in Chester Springs, LOL!
|
You are correct, sir!
I plan on changing that. Thanks for the support all! |
Something special is about to happen!
Two nice size boxes showed up today. I like to alternate tearing apart and building up. The tearing down just gets old after a while. So, do you know what this is?! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...B921A23C74.jpg I spent most of the time running for hardware and installing studs. Well, there was also that pesky time when the wife wanted me to come in and eat dinner with her. Women, can't live with them...what ever... Here is another half of awesome in the making! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...B9264E4E3E.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...B92A312070.jpg Tomorrow I'll finish this install, paint the fan (just silver, wouldn't want to taint my engine with an MM kind of look), and install the cam position sensor. Now we're really having fun!!! |

My wife left for kick boxing this morning and complained that I was hogging up the garage where her car should be parked and she might have to scrape ice off the windshield. I pointed to this and said, "suck it up."
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...CDD16C1E1C.jpg The 930 should be in the garage before her car, but women never understand that the real purpose of the garage is for men to work, sleep, and fart. The 930 actually goes in the other one car garage, but you have to squeeze out due to all my tools being in there, so she's not concerned with that bay, just the one I am trying to work in. Anyway, finished the install today. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...CDDF7D7418.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...CDDB001664.jpg And with the rain hats: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...CDED8CF7DB.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...CDE8BAEC20.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...CDE42775C0.jpg Tomorrow I'm back on the car. I'll finish gutting the interior and if I have time do some work to finish the new flares, but I also want to paint the fan and put it back together. So many projects, so little time! |
Mark
Nice work!...the engine is great looking eye candy! Kevin |
Great thread
Please explain more about your injection system, size and ECU Thanks Glen |
