Replaced my alternator on my 77. When I put everything back together and spun the fan worked fine no noise. However, when I went to torque the main 24mm nut back on I spun the fan again and it would not spun without making a grinding noise. If I had to guess, I would say the noise is not one of the fan blades rubbing the outside housing but the fan is rubbing from behind? If I keep tightening the nut the fan will not move at all? This is prior to getting to the proper torque of 29.48 Ft. lbs.
I do not know what I did when I put the new alternator and fan back together however something I did was wrong. I am not sure how to approach or fix this issue. I know it was kind of hard getting the fan/alternator back together and getting the alternator bolts through the fan housing. Can you get the alternator bolts to far into the housing? How much should the bolts be showing prior to putting on the hub extension (#10) By the way, is it useful to use #10 or can you do away with it? Anyway, if anyone has idea what the fix might be I would appreciate the help. I be pulling the housing out tomorrow. I just want to start out right so I do not end up with the same mess again. My plan was to take everything (alternator, fan and housing ) apart and start over. To this end, because I will be beating the new alternator with a rubber mallet and piece of wood. Can I damage the new alternator i.e. diodes etc. I do not no of any other way to get everything apart again. Anyway, if anyone has idea what the fix might be I would appreciate the help. ![]() |

You need number 10 to direct the air correctly over the cylinders. Otherwise you will not get even cooling.
There is a spacer washer at the fan to alternator that is beveled on one side. The bevel faces the alt. may be part of the problem if installed backwards. The bolts going through the alernator need to be exactly equal in length on the back to ensure everything is properly lined up. Sounds like you may not have it completely seated in the housing and it is twisting off center. Take it out and do it again... Don't hit the shaft. Do a search on the drop method for removal. Basically drop the fan assembly on 2 evenly spaced boards with padding underneath to catch the alternator and gently tap it out. (John Walker approved method) ![]() The fan can be removed using a couple of bolts as a basic puller after cutting threads into 2 opposing holes. (Not sure of size) Do another search on removing the fan. Here ya go: Fan hsng, alternator removal 3.0 SC alternator fan removal?

+2 as Dennis said, just re-trace, I am sure you will find the issue. Take your time.
I hate when I send thing out for service and my car sits, I sometimes forget my order of things when I replace it. This happens Brother don't sweat it.

Your fan belt may be too tight and when you tighten it up with the big nut you pull the fan down into/onto the housing. I know you don't think this is the case but you are asking for input.
My housing is the skankiest piece of shiet I have ever seen - it is a split, frayed and non-square piece of crap. Spent a good deal of time cleaning it up with a dremmel grinding down high points and the like to allow the alternator to seat in there properly. Once cleaned up it flexed less when under stress (bolts tightened normally) and did not hit the housing. You can clearly see when you pull it back apart if you are having interference problems.

Well I think John Wa
Well I think "JWWorkshop" has figured out the problem for me.
I forgot to place a washer on the alternator. The pictures shows 2 types of the washer. Will be taking the alternator out tomorrow and placing the washer to see if that takes care of problem. Thanks to everyone for the help. I let you know how things turn out. ![]() |
