I just bought a white 70 911S. It is in great condition overall and had a relatively recent mechanical rebuild. The engine is tight and runs like a banshee. However, it is a little dreary to look at. Not a lot of oil/grease but just kind of dirty and tarnished. For instance, the fan is dull, the fasteners, screws, clips are tarnished or just a bit rusty. Hoses are dull, dirty faded, etc. I've read the stuff in the tech library and it has been helpful but I need more info on bringing up the details. Is the only way to really do it right is to drop the engine and go from there? I am not looking for a concours treatment but I would like it to look like it runs!

I took up powdercoating as a hobby, with the help of eastwood and before you know it, I was accepting items from customers. Many items can be removed, painted powdercoated etc.. you can use exotic colors or match OEM specs, I used a product called aluma blast on allot of my cast aluminium pieces for protection and a durable finish. They offer cadmium, gold cad, silver cad, a variety of blacks to match accurate detail under the hood and all over. I went to my Lowes home improvement store and found all the metric stainless hardware, clips, screws etc ou could think of. Wire ties are my fav, nothing looks better than wire bundles with evenly spaced wire ties and properly routed and secured. My car might not be a trophy winner, but i wanted the same as you, to look as well as it runs, I'm not ashamed to pop the hood. Good luck and have fun..... Peter |

You can still get many OEM parts for your engine's exterior through your Porsche dealer or mechanic. Some are pricey but most are not and IMO will look more correct than powdercoating or replating. It all depends on what you're after. I replaced the fan and some other parts on my '72S with new OEM a couple of years ago, and with some patina it now looks excellent.

I'd say it would be pretty hard to imrove the appearance of those early engines. Just get it really clean.

To me the most bang for the buck since it's front and center is the fan/pulley assembly. New ones will run you hundreds or you can replate the cad stuff, bead blast and clear coat the fan for a tenth the cost and for a similar result (picture below of one I just did). A thorough cleaning of engine & compartment, and replacement of some of the visible fasteners (e.g. hose clamps, nuts, bolts) helps too; I'd try to stick with the yellow cad hardware as that's how they came from the factory. I did mine recently, and opted to remove the engine for better access. A good looking engine compartment definitely is impressive when you raise the lid. Good luck.

one for the info! Doug - THAT is what I had in mind for my S! My Roadster is a concours winner (Monterey and others) and you could literally eat off the engine. Unfortunately, I bought it that way! I want to do more of the restoration of the 911 myself. My goal is to have an awesome street car good enough for fun shows that is as close to original as possible.

for me
alot of buffing and rubbing with simichrome i prefer laceing cord to wireties. eastwood has become a really good friend to me i use their stuff alot chassis black and that clear paint is my faves. i will have pics up later on in the month. Laceing cord H stitch chicago knot running knot .. late |
