Just bought a, '84 3.2 911, and on the way home the accelerator pedal started sticking. If I slam it all the way to the floor, it pops back. If I push in the clutch, it pops back.

When I push down on the pedal, I can feel a 'click', and it stays there, unless I pop the clutch or slam the go pedal to the floor and let it spring back.

Jack the car up (use jack stands) and disconnect the throttle linkage at the trans. bell crank. Make sure the pivot there is good. Then determine if the problem is fore or aft of that point. If before it may be a problem with the pivot at the pedal cluster or possibly a cable routing problem through the tunnel. If aft of there check the return springs on the engine and the bell crank pivot bolted to the back of the motor.

Redneck cruise control?

Sounds as if the lever connecting the pedal pushrod with the tunnel rod is hanging up on the edge of the tunnel opening. The lever could be bent, or the tunnel edge bent, or the bushings leaving too much slop. This is not an uncommon problem on earlier 911s.

Peel back your carpet, pop the throttle pedal loose from the rod, remove the floorboard, pop the pedal back on the linkage, and watch where it hangs up when you depress it. (I've never owned a 3.2, so am assuming pedal/linkage in 3.2 cars is the same as earlier cars).

Also, on more than one occasion I have found a 911 with the clutch cable looped around the throttle rod inside the tunnel, which can cause strange things to happen.

I'm going to try Dave's suggestion first, because (a) it sounds a whole lot easier , and (b) because I think that's where the problem lies. When I push down on the gas pedal with one hand and hold the other between it & the brake pedal, I can feel the 'click' somewhere back there

You saw my location, eh? Actually more like 'monkey cruise control', because I didn't like using the clutch unnecessarily to pop it, nor slamming the accelerator, so I took off my right shoe and used my prehensile toes to pull the accelerator back to its resting position...that got old really fast. I'm glad the problem developed when I was within 100 miles of home, rather than the 750 I started from.

Before you go crazy, check this out. Pretty common. Cheap and easy to fix too.

Thanks, Orlando. I plan to pull out the floorboard tomorrow and see what's what. The zip-tie fix is definitely within my realm of capabilities.

I'm sure I snapped something with aggressive driving. It was early AM, driving the car on part 2 of a 750-mile trip home, and I had just gotten out of a godawful snarl of traffic, so I was already in a bad mood. Some cat in a late-model Mustang wanted to 'play', pulling up next to me, revving, then pulling in front of me, then again dropping back behind...only to do it over again.

And again.

And again.

Just as the left lane completely opened up, 'Whiplash' by Metallica came up on my playlist, and I took that as a sign. I had been driving very responsibly up until then, I swear. However, I was really getting tired of 'Mustang Guy', so I dropped it back into 4th, and went from there. After that was when I noticed my accelerator pedal was sticking.

You know what, though?

It was worth it.
