Best Engine/Gearbox installation method
I am part through restoring my 76 Targa and I am close to installing the engine and gearbox. I purchased the car in bits, engine and gearbox out, so I didn't remove them. I can see that I have two options in installing them, and that is to assemble them on the bench and instal as a unit, or instal the gearbox and then instal the engine.
I can see advantages in both methods but what is the most recommended option and why? |

I've removed and installed engines in 911s from the early 70's to the early 90's. In my opinion the easiest way is to have the trans and engine installed as a unit. Trying to line up the clutch fork with the engine installed on a jack and the trans on jack will be extremely difficult.

Installing the engine and trans as a unit is WAY easier.

Install as one unit.
Remove the bumper, raise the rear end as high as you can so you can clear the topof the engine and roll it in. Lower the car so the angle of attack into the tunnel is not so steep then guide it in watch all areas. Once in raise the engine and install the remaining components, trans mount first. A helper would be nice to have 2nd pair of eyes make sure nothing is caught. Maybe a fellow Aussie Pelican can give you a hand. Break a leg brother down under ![]()
