Elephant Racing vs. Rebel Racing Suspension Upgrades
If certain stars align, I'll be doing a major overhaul to the suspension in my 73 in March/April. I've been a long time Elephant Racing fan:
Elephant Racing Long Term test and have noticed more and more folks installing the Rebel Racing gear. Racing Off Season- Suspension Refresh time and I'm most likely going in that direction myself. Both are obviously great products. I'm hoping that those who have put some miles on the RR stuff can post about their experience here. Please include all relevant details on your car.

I think the percentage of clients who are serious racers is greater for Rebel Racing than for Elephant, so you might want to ask on the Racing forum as well.

Front or Rear? I am curious about the rear components, esp. the benefits of the ASP springplates for a street vehicle.

Those ER "plates" look heavy to me.
I have heard WEVO does a needle bearing design? Is that front or rear?

I have the old bushing off, and all look good except that one front bushing mount was actually in 3 pieces when i took it out...not the bushing, the METAL. Eek.

Both make great parts, we have used both for years. My only concern is that when sourcing parts for a customer we tend to go with Elephant as Clint (Rebel) can be difficult to get a hold of at times. When I call Chuck, he is always there or returns my calls/emails promptly.
Cheers

I found Clint (rebel) fantastic to deal with, he spent a fair bit of time explaining components to me over the phone and his pricing was very fair.

My thread from this past summer should be a great guide for you. I weighed Elephant versus Rebel Racing and very happy with my decision to go with Clint and Rebel Racing...the pictorial of my install is detailed in the thread below:

So after driving with them for some time now, do you have any extra thoughts on them or they transparent to your driving?

Yasin -
I just read your write-up. Do you get any squeaking from the polyurethane sway bar bushings? And did you replace all 4, or just the two inner bushings? (sorry for the hijack)

I replaced the entire suspension on my 1986 930 track car with Elephant racing products about a year ago. I worked with Chuck Moreland on the specifications and you could not ask for a guy that is more knowledgeable about Porsches.
I have the rear adjustable spring plates which make TB, camber and caster changes a breeze, Von shocks (adjustable in the rear), 23/31 hollow TB's, camber plates, triangulated front strut, front (thru -body) & rear adjustable sway bars, poly-bronze bushings, dropped spindles & de-cambered ball joints, etc, etc, etc. The installation process is well documented by Elephant and the entire install went without a hitch. I did call Chuck a few times for direction, which he happily provided. I did take the car to the 901 Shop (Stuart, Fl) to have new rear swaybar mounts installed and also added Wevo (race) trans mounts. They also did a corner balance and alignment. The end result is nothing short of fabulous. Previous outings at the track with the almost stock suspension was all about survival. The Elephant suspension is confidence inspiring and I've had zero issues over the past year at the track. The car is still street legal, but that usually consists of a drive to the gas station to fill up before a track day. But, the suspension is still very compliant on the street and I have no reservations driving it when I need a fix.

I believe ShakinJoe has a comparison of at least the front bushings.

I choose between Elephant and Rebell when I bought a coilover setup last year.
I went with Elephant based 80% on that Chuck answers mail and phonecalls, that is a big deal.

I suspect that it may be difficult to find a performance difference here. I've got the Elephant rears (replacing Weltmeister urethanes), and they seem to work well. I have needle bearing fronts from some VW guys in or near Boston which have been in for years. They seem to work great. All of these systems reduce squirm, and remove "sticktion" from the movements.
I bungled my rear installation by damaging one of the glue-in races. Chuck supplied me with a replacement, though he kidded me for buying his stuff from a secondary source. He ranks high in my books. But I see some speak highly of Clint also. I suspect that what we have here is capitalism at work - how to value service, but also which has the best price. It is almost a bit sad to see an innovator like Chuck face competition for what is a fairly smallish market, but that is a given. Performance parts can be a tough business - look in a Summit or Jegs catalog some time to see how many makers of "Aeroquip" hose fittings there are out there. Randy - I'd think that any weight difference between these two competing sets of parts would be pretty small. And they are all sprung, so I'd think any difference in acceleration due to weight could not be measured on the track or road. |

+1 Rebel Racing
Purchased tons of stuff from him Clint is a Super awesome down to earth guy... Kinda think of rebel racing as a underdog company out to help people rather than trying to make a buck and that goes along way. They don't Rebadge their product Last edited by Blackbyrd; 01-05-2012 at 10:42 PM.. |
