Engine case Defect 3.0 SC repaired?
I've seen this covered here before but gave up searching after 30 minutes...
So, I'm tearing into the big address the oil leaking on my 80SC engine and came across this as I was replacing the oil cooler seals/O rings. Is this "really" an issue and cause of oil leaks? My old Pcar mechanic blamed some leakage on this case defect... Said he tried to fix it but didn't guarantee it wouldn't leak again... Well with so much oil under this side of my engine I'm addressing it again "while I'm in there". I saw in that other thread JB Weld used to plug these recesses... I'm cool with that unless someone can explain why not too. I don't see how oil could access this area unless the oil cooler seals were bad and leaking into the crevasse between the cooler and the case... What say you? ![]() And another to better show the area ![]() Btw here are a couple shots of the intake path into the heads, look ok? If you saw the injectors and what was left of the sleeves and orings you'd be amazed it blew uber clean in its last smog test! Amazing engines! Wonder how many miles are on this engine? And if its had bottom end opened up. Not the original case to my 911 so I have questions! ![]() ![]() Injectors! ![]() ![]() Thanks for taking a look guys! Cheers Jason Btw I'm looking for an engine adaptor ring to borrow so I can mount the engine on the stand and address the exhaust studs! Maybe local Pelican (SFV) has one they don't need for a couple weeks? TIA!

Are you talking about the mark next to the mounting stud?
None of those areas contribute to the sealing area. The o-rings are the seal. If there is a defect on the o-ring sealing surface you may have problems. I guess I am not clear what defect you are referring to. Intake and exhaust tract are remarkably clean.

If you are referring to the little groove where the cast in steel tube is exposed it's very unlikely to be a source of oil leaks, but filling it with JBweld won't hurt anything if it makes you feel better.

that area is a well known potential oil leak. not all cases for sure, but enough of them that it's worth sealing up when you have the chance. clean bone dry and apply JB weld and a piece of duct tape on top to keep it in place until it sets.

Awesome. Thanks John & Roland. I used JB weld and finished it smooth...
