Well, that makes a bit more sense.

Sounds like you need to adjust the fuel/air mixture. The turbo forum woul be a better place for this although those guys seem to dig flames coming out of their exhaust.

It took me a few seconds to interpret too...and it's "backfar" in a proper southern drawl . To the OP, make sure all of your exhaust gaskets and nuts are good and tight since you've made some "moods" there .

ps: Just pickin' with ya Falnaim... you probably couldn't understand my accent if I was speaking to ya...good luck!

Is that the only issue? does it take the throttle okay? Backfires when? Hot, Cold? More detail.

You're AFR is gone off whack for some reason, your car doesn't have a computer since in 87 they still used CIS injection

Could be a bunch of things, your post doesn't detail enough for us to really trouble shoot your problem. I would think if this is a recent development that your fuel pump might be on its way out

Well, unless the turbo is different from NA cars, my '87 has a computer, and motronic. Wouldn't his? AFR may still apply.

Some of the earlier responders may have seen my "Hmmm..." post earlier (since deleted), as I was thinking exactly the same thing...I was wrong too

the turbo has a relay that goes open loop at, i thought around 3k rpm. this takes the O2 sensor out of the equation and it just uses fuel pressure (and the AFM) to se t the mixture.

i saw you had a bigger spring, you may have to richen it up for this "turbo killer" 1 bar spring.
i would start with the WUR and vauum circuit to it. (vacuum enrichment for the WUR).

there may be an enrichment kit out there. i was looking at a 930 that hadd the 1 bar spring and an enrichment kit from andial. i passed.

I believe the turbo did not go to motronic until the last year, 1989. Stayed with CIS injection.

Sounds like wastegate to me...First time mine opened up, I looked in my mirror on the road behind me for parts falling out of the engine!

Model year 1989 also used K-Jetronic (CIS) - as did the turbo models for many years to follow . . .

All the 965's used CIS injection as well, until 93/94 I believe

Ok with a bit more info its def starting to sound like an overboost issue, do you have a manual boost controller? If so I would dial back the boost to 7-9 pounds (PSI) and see how the motor responds

I overboosted my NG900 one time at 24psi, and it was similar to this, lucky to not blow the motor... although it acted the same way when my pump was on the way out

If you don't have a manual boost controller, than replace the WG spring
