Is that a hole or rust hole in battery mount??

Hi Every one, Can you guys ID this for me? Is the yellow circle(first picture) is a battery rust or only a hole. The second picture will show detail.

If someone claim this is a rust free car, WILL YOU BELIVE THAT??

Thanks!

Ick! Yeah, that's nasty rust in a late model car.

And is that shiny black wet battery acid goo? Or did someone try to cover it up with POR15?

Absolutely get hat cleaned up and dried. If there is any sulfuric acid in that mix, it's making matters worse minute by minute.

That car is going to need a front pan. Do a search if you don't know what work that entails. Tank is pretty rusty too.

It is a small hole caused by a leaking battery...then it rusts after it is exposed to the elements. from the ad, it looks like this is a long term project, missing many items to make the car liveable. Is this what you want ?

That is def rust. If it has rusted thru there it may have rust below that area in the body tub that supports your front suspension. You'd have a lot of sheet metal work to do.

sure it is not

Sure, it is not what I want, I am looking for a rust free clean chassis, not some thing I need to work on, my 930 has a front damage. The reason I buy it for repair use not for another project.

It is interesting to see it start rust free, then to a small hole from battery acid. It just hasn't made it through the last mm of steel to come out on the other side. Guess what you will find under the paint and fuel tank support. I've got to say though, the odds of finding any chassis that is truly rust free is pretty slim.

It seems we have dueling threads about this...

You're buying a tub. The work involved to make it a car or to graft the front of it onto a 930 is astronomical. You may know more about it than I, but this doesn't seem like the best way to go about making your repairs.

Vinyl_Tien,
Yeah, its a rust hole like I said early in the thread. Its nasty icky down there in front. But none of that is very difficult to fix, and very common on 911s.

I also looked at the EBay thing you posted the link too. It seems accurately described there. The seller does note the 1/2 inch rust hole. It is sort of confusing the way he then describes the hole as not a hole. But you can understand that his intent is to say that the pan underneath the gas tank support is not rusted through. Now I see the dueling threads link posted, and read through it from the sellers point of view.

In my opinion, it is fair for what it is. It doesn't look like the seller was trying to mislead anyone on the condition. I think you have a moral obligation to either follow through on the original deal, or let him keep the $300 deposit.

Dave, I don't want to start a heated debate, just an honest question:

To your point, I wonder if that is a bit like advertising a set of seats as "like new" and stating that they have no wear on them, only later to disclose that although there is zero wear, there is a cigarette burn?

EDIT:
I wanted to add that I didn't take the ad as being deceitful, but I can certainly understand the misunderstanding between the two parties.

That rust hole is in the battery support tray, not the pan of the car. The tray is a $40 item that can be removed and easily replaced. Or, you can remove it, clean up the rust and install a smaller Optima using the alternate mounting point.

The only way to see if it has affected the pan is to tear into the metal and see how far the cancer has spread.

Wayner,
To follow with your analogy, I would liken it to claiming in your ad that the like new seat has a hole from a Marlboro, including a clear photo of the hole, then saying its not from a cigarette but only a Marlboro. An odd way to put it, but still perfectly clear to the potential buyer what the condition of the seat is.

When Vinyl_Tien originally posted I laughed and thought to myself this guy must be pretty dumb not to recognize that as a rust hole. I fired off my response that it was indeed a rust hole. But seeing the whole story now, I'm the one who was dumb. He knew exactly what it was, but was just building a written record to support his reneging on the deal. Most probably my response, as well as those from others, were quoted and sent to Paypal as justification to have them pull the deposit back from the seller. I regret now having done this. My apologies to the seller.

Dave

Look at the rust on the fuel tank, it shows the areas you need to be concerned about, including the tank itself.
