What's this on a cabrio's engine?

I've seen this on a lot of cabriolet engines, and don't know what it is or what it's for. It's the thing just left of the engine fan below the distributor that looks like a hydraulic shock or something.

It's an engine vibration damper. AFAIK only cabs have them.

More flex in the cab chassis - this will avoid that the car twists into a pretzel when you hit the accelerator.

Yep, that is a cab item. Except, every once in a while you'll see a transplanted motor with this mount, which is always a clue to what had the motor before.

Just how flexible are these things and how much could that little piece correct? I won't likely see any track or even AutoX use, but most certainly will get some spirited street driving. I've read stories about targa flex when on a lift or sloped driveway or similar. I just don't want to be driving a wet noodle, especially when I upgrade the engine. Though they DID have 930 cabs...

No insult, but I don't think you will be able to overdrive the car. Cabs and Targas are just fine for trackdays or canyons/mountains.

No insult taken. My skin is a bit thicker than that.

I didn't think i would be able to, but stories of overly flexible cabs and targas had me a bit concerned.

Arrow Yeahper...

That is how easily you can ID a cheap Cab conversion...

If it`s not there, it`s definitely not an original Cab...

I am pretty sure that Cabs came with stiffer engine mounts than the coupes. Its a popular upgrade on coupes to upgrade to stiffer mounts to the same ones cabs came with standard.

What do people think would be the impact of removing this dampener on a cab.

Also potentially putting solid engine mounts in?

It's meant to dampen higher frequency "twists" than anything you'd see on a track or on a lift. More like keeping the door windows from vibrating from a rough running engine.

I deleted the 'vibration' shock when I modified my cab's engine and everything is fine without it.

I thought it was a damper meant to reduce engine vibration for increased comfort. Cabs are typically more of a cruising car than coupes or targas.
Coupes and targas have basically the same body structure but targas don't have the damper, so the body flex idea is out.

What are the differences in body stiffening between coupe/targa/cab?

I was curious, so I took mine out to see how much resistance there was. Mine may be shot, but I can't see what good, if any it actually does. Seems like someone had a great idea that in reality isn't needed.

If, when I do an engine drop, I get a coupe mount. That stupid shock gets in the way.
