First valve adjustment - have some questions! ;)
Hi guys,
This is the first time I've done this on a 911. I have an 85 Carrera. I removed the valve covers and the gaskets are sort of an orange rubber stuff... are these silicone gaskets, and if so can I just re-use them rather than put the ones on that i bought from our host? The car was not leaking at all...so these seemed to be working well. If I can re-use them...what do I need to do to prepare them? Second.... Do I have to use brand new ny-lock nuts, or is it OK to reuse the old ones? Thanks! Mark. ![]()

I would use new gaskets and new nuts. Noone wants to do this twice.
I tried re-using silicone gaskets on my SC, they didn't leak before but did leak after reinstall, not alot but somewhat. Others on the forum have re-used them without leaks....better lucky than good I guess. ![]()

With those questions maybe you shouldn't have removed the V.C.'s at all.
ALWAYS replace the gaskets, nuts, and Aluminum washers. I see you do have a new kit on the bench, good thinking and good luck. And you've been well advised on the Kendall gear lube, you'll like it.

Those appear to be the Silicone type you can reuse, I have them as well, they work nicely.
I would use the new locknuts from your kit though. Ferg

I'll use the new gaskets then.
So...another question - the Bentley's manual says there is a "Z1 mark" on the crank case pulley. I see 3 different notches on the cc pulley at different locations on the pulley. 2 close to each other, one further away. One of these lines up correctly when the distributor rotor is aligned with the "1" mark. My question is.... I don't see any sort of "label" on the crank case pulley like they show in the books. What I do see is what looks like a weight or something attached at the point of where "Z1" is stamped in the books. Cylinder 1's intake valve rocker looks up all the way. Can I be certain this is truly TDC? Perhaps Carrera's don't have the text "Z1" stamped on the pulley? Mark.

![]() Besides, it is by trying and asking questions that we learn.
