Heat and defrost with headers
I'm going to put this out again.
My 72 doesn't get driven much in the Oregon winters because with the racing headers I have no heat or defrost. I've tried: 1. Heat exchanger from a small sport airplane. Looked good but I have a twin plug distributor and the tin behind is modified and prevents good air flow to the heat exchanger on the left side. 2. Marine 12 volt heater but it requires at least an alternator with 50 amp capacity and mine isn't. 3. Any other 12 volt heater is really questionable with the exception possibly of hard wiring and a larger fuse. 4. Moving to Florida but I did that once and moved back to Oregon.

Hi Kent. Wish I had a good answer for you but last summer I want thru McMinnville and went to the aircraft museum there..wow what a place! I lived in DC for 7 years and that museum there puts the Smithsonian to shame!
Cheers

I've seen small 12v hair dryer elements used in race 911's.
I also run headers and was thinking maybe a alloy pipe from chassis to chassis hole at the rear and the engine heat would dissipate the pipe, have one end on the fan and the other to the screen? Like an intercooler well heat exchanger. Or just run with the windows down and wrap up warm ![]() |

+1 Wabasto heater sounds like your best option. wabasco may be spicier though...

An electric blanket even sounds good if you could find a 12 volt one.

Would you lose any power going with SSI's?

I'd dump the headers and install SSI's. I doubt you'll lose much if any h.p. I friend has a 3.4 efi street motor putting 345 crank h.p. with SSI's. The motor started to lose some power above 6,000 rpm. I run SSI's on my 3.5 turbo motor at 425 crank h.p. I may lose a few h.p. at the top but not enough to warrant running with no heat.
I've tried all the methods mentioned above, plus trying to make heater boxes in a effort to get heat into my '68 VW Crewcab, non of them worked. Or they put out so little heat it wasn't worth it. I finally installed a Smith gas heater.

Thanks everyone for your replys. As my winter projects are whitalled down I'll get to this heat situation and have to make a decision. The little gas heater doesn't look like such a bad idea and since I'm so paranoid about weight, 10 lbs I think I can justify.

Put in seat heaters and wear driving gloves. Your butt stays warm and you look cool. Win-win.

The gas heaters are pretty expensive. I think SSIs are the most cost-effective way to do this. Although fabricating a new heat exchanger box doesn't seem that complicated, and you'd really only need one.
These after-the-fact threads should be required reading whenever someone considers plain headers for these cars. Because sooner or later, it seems like everybody gets tired of being cold. 993 short headers are a second-hand bargain, if you can get them to work with your application. |

Part of my problem with heat exchangers is I have a twin plug distributor and the tin behind it has been modified (moved forward away from the distributor) which restricts the flow of air out and down to the heat exchanger.
Someone suggested a small heat exchanger on the right side which seems like and idea. I haven't looked to see how the plumbing would work though.
