green oel light
This morning while just a mile away from home and just about to pull in to a gas station, I noticed the green oel light sort of flickered on. The light was gone after I fired the car up again. I was about fifteen miles into my drive when I noticed the oel light had come on again. This time it stayed solid for the most part. It seemed to flicker a bit if I stepped on the accelerator. I drove home 26 miles with the oel light on. Oil pressure is normal. I checked the oil and it is 1/4 above the minimal line. All seems well with the engine and performance. Hopefully someone can give me some direction on this issue.

Wouldn't a bad sender give me a wacky oil pressure reading?

The idiot warning light and the oil pressure sender are different systems. There are combined senders, but they are not used on SCs.
The idiot light sender is prone to problems. On my first 911 (well used), the wire that attaches to the idiot sender, which had been poorly spliced for some reason, would touch a ground during sporting driving. Scary, but oil pressure stayed stable so I didn't worry all too much. But all that is hard to get to on an SC. Search for threads about leaky idiot light senders (perhaps a more common issue) and how to get at the sucker. Not expensive, makes sense to replace, which will allow you to check wiring in the immediate area. |

Okay, so that makes sense why there is a single sender and a dual sender offered in the parts catalogue. So what you're saying is that it could be a faulty sender or it could be shotty wiring. Right?

Yes. Check the connector and make sure it's tight on the wire.

I haven't done any troubleshooting to check the wire connection, but something odd occurs when the tach goes beyond 4,000 rpm: the oel light turns off. Back down below 4k rpm and it turns back on. Any ideas?

Check your charging circuit and battery....when an alt starts to go bad with up and down spikes things go wonky....

Bad connection. Clean and cut a small section of wire off and reconnect

Hmmm. That just got me thinking about how the starter seemed a little sluggish during this morning's cold start.
Thank you all for your input. More would be appreciated of course. ![]() |

Get an inexpensive voltage gauge that plugs into the lighter socket. If your alternator or regulator is on it's way out, you'll see the voltage fluctuating a lot or will be low.
