What's the purpose of this? Mine was missing...

Did an oil change today and replaced the washer on the oil pressure relief piston on the bottom of the engine at the same time (it was leaking a bunch as a previous owner way over torqued it and smooshed the washer beyond it's sealing threshold....)

The sleeve is missing from mine. (I had the spring and piston fall out)

Oil Pressure Relief Sleeve, 911/911 Turbo (1978-89)

Any idea what the sleeve does? The other relief piston mounted horizontally doesn't have one, at least according to the detail I saw. It's only a $7 dollar part. Can it wait till the next oil change?

I think that sleeve is a support for the spring.

It's a guide for the spring that keeps it in column, yes, you want it in there ASAP.

Great, add that to my next Pelican order.....

Any reason why the one mounted horizontally doesn't require one?

I've never heard of this. Can someone post a picture of it installed so I can see what you're talking about?
