To everyone using smaller, lightweight batteries...

My Interstate battery finally gave up the ghost and won't hold a charge anymore, so I've decided to finally go the smaller/lightweight battery route. I went today to Batteries Plus to look at the Werker battery that people here have used with success, but am confused as to how they actually attached. It has two small FEMALE screw-type connections on it, while my wires are the standard female battery cables. BP didn't have any posts that could screw into the female posts to accept my battery wires. All the other smaller batteries I've looked at seem to have the same issue. So my question is, to the guys using the smaller batteries: Are you modifying the battery to accept your wires or modifying the wires to accept the battery? Also, is there any newer, updated thoughts on smaller batteries in a 911? Is there a new go-to battery? In a lot of the older posts I read the Odyssey PC860(?) was the one a lot of people were talking about, just wanted to know if there was anything new on the market people liked. Thanks!

I've recently installed the Odyssey PC925T (T is for terminals). The posts were an exact fit to my existing Porsche pos/neg leads, so I just plugged them right on with no problem.

I've had it on a battery tender while I'm rebuilding the suspension, but prior to that, I've had it sit for three weeks in the cold (garage) and it started right up.

I installed the Optima red top 34R using the cutting board solution to mount it. The 34R has the correct posts to mate with your existing battery cables, and the 'R' means they are reversed so the negative terminal is towards the back of the car. That way the negative cable can reach the post.

I have run the Odyessy PC-680 in 2 different P-cars and have never had a problem starting. They work great. I built my own mount, see below. I like this configuration because the 12v hot wire is a little farther away from the inside fender wall. I put a piece of plastic there after this picture was taken to eliminate the possibility of a short.



I do use a charger if the car has not been run for a week.

Troll or not, that's BS. I just sold a 2003 Civic Si
I owned for 6 months and it was embarrassingly slow. My 911--any of our 911s--would destroy that car in every measurable way.

Hey! I was just having fun. It just cracks me up when folks want to lose weight off their cars when modern cars are so fast now. My 1985 Carrera 3.2 was rated by Porsche with a 0-60 time of 5.6 Very quick for it's day.

Well I look at it like this. It'll cost me a LOT of money to improve the power of my engine, to increase the stopping power of my brakes, to stiffen up my suspension, to get wider wheels with stickier rubber.

OR, I could do what Porsche has done with the R, RS, ST, RSR and make the car lighter.

That improves every aspect of a sports car, and the stock battery can be upwards of 40+ lbs in the far corner of the car.

So why not make the car easily lighter by replacing with a light weight battery?

It's not like that's the ONLY thing I did and suddenly expect my car to be quick...like some kid putting a coffee can muffler and a big wing on the back of a Civic who doesn't have a clue. It think that comparison is likely to piss people here off...especially people with a lot of knowledge, experience and money into their lightweight Porsche. Not really a thoughtful comment, I think..

No worries, I think I understand what you were joking about now. Yeah...people look at my 911 and think "how fast is that?!"...when a stock Subaru WRX will smoke it (till we get to the twisties at least.)

So I guess yeah, I'm hoping that with weight loss and some hot rod mods, my 35 year old sports car will be faster (as fast?) as a modern hot hatch like a GTI or WRX.

Anyway, as far as weight goes, every bit counts!

i have over 700 chp in my 930 and it weighs in at 2300 pounds....and i am still looking at easy ways to reduce weight!! just the way we think???

I am using the Shuriken BT-20 ($80 on-line and weighs 13.5lbs) in several of my cars and really like it, it is a great alternative to the Odyssey PC680 (which I also have in one of cars). You will have to buy the terminal posts seperately but they are available online for $10-$15 for the pair.

I'm using an Antigravity YTX12-24 battery along with the Odyssey SAE terminals and Rennline battery hold down. This whole setup weighs in right around 5 lbs. This is ~35 lbs less than the Optima Red Top battery I pulled out of the car!

It's expensive that's for sure but man it's a nice battery! There are discounts available if you look around on the web.

My car is set up for motorsport and I used a PC680 for 2 years. It was "just enough" to start the car. I switched to a Shorai 36 which is 10 lbs lighter and more CCA. 18 months and so far, so good. I also added a custom mount and fresh matching batt cables at the time. Cables are cheap.
