So does the top fit any year without modification to the front window frame?
On my Saratoga top the latches go in just like the factory soft top. |

the current version for sale uses the factory hardtop mounting system which is different than any other factory targa mounting setup. we are currently working on making a j-hook version. |
Yep.
We're getting close to having the J-hook frame model done. |

A roller latch version may come next, right now I'm working on finishing the j-hook frames.
Targamaniac, just pm'd you. |
Progress has been slow due to other commitments however I'm still moving along on it.
The j-hook bottom is nearly completely modeled and I hop to be laying up the tool over the weekend. Regards,http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1373369308.jpg |
any updates? These certainly look beautiful.
|
It's that time of the year where people are thinking about needing a hardtop soon.. Next month mine will be going on. :)
|
Plenty of distractions due to merging with another company. We're fitting bits and opieces in as we can based on priorities.
I hope to have an update in the near future |
Todd,
Any chance you will be selling the old style latch assemblies for these tops anytime? I asked about them a while ago but received no response. (Last April) |
Hi Dennis,
that factory hard top latch has been a major stumbling block for us. It's something that we have been unsuccessful in finding and simply can't afford to have stamped. We have decided to focus efforts on the j-hook version next and are making some small progress as we can. If someone else out there can helps source factory hard top latches, we would love the help! Thanks, |
Getting closer,
the J-Hook bottom frame model is now fully formed and ready for surfacing... With any luck, we'll be building the mold next week. Stay tuned! Thanks, http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1392899584.jpg |
looking good!
|
...Just when you thought a Targa couldn't get any sexier.
Looks like an exceptional piece that will increase performance over the original top. |
you still have that lexan top you made shane? always liked the look of that one.
|
Very COOL!!!

It would be interesting to frame a smaller piece of tinted lexan into your tops for those who want the see through option. SmileWavy |

hmmmm |
Which years were J hooks which were roller type? I would be very interested in one for my 87.
Thanks |
I'f I'm not mistaken, 86 or 87 was the first year for Roller Latches....
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I will chime in. |
1986...

The OEM Targa hardtop, available in 1975, used a different clamp and different holes in the windshield header. Those clamps might be easier to reproduce than the folding top j-hook clamps, though they are no longer available.
|
Thanks Howard.
We've had clones of the 75 or hardtop available for almost a year however the latches are simply nowhere to be found. We looked into stamping them but at a cost of nearly 80k for dies we opted to Go another direction. This the j-hooks. J-hook latches are currently available from our host and others. In addition, someone wanting to swap working latches from their busted folding top will have the option of saving a few bucks. |
Todd,
I am a bit confused. Are you producing a top right now that will work on an 87 right out of the box? If not what is required to make it work on an 87 if possible, or will you be producing one anytime? Thanks Howard aka Trader220 |
Howard, I apologize for the confusion.
The top we have in production is a clone of the 75 hardtop. Meaning it accepts the same OE hardtop latches as the 75 top does. Next up is the j-hook top. The outer portion is the same as all other targas however the inner frame is designed to accept the j-hook latches. After J-Hook, we'll look into the roller latch frames. If someone were so inclined, outer top skins can be provided separately such that you could bond it to an existing frame. Hope this clears up the mud just a little.... |
How is this project coming along?
|
Cool to see this kind of stuff happening in my backyard. Very cool top! Thanks for sharing the process with us.
|
It's coming. Slowly. Lots of priorities to juggle.
Molds are done, next step is proto part layup. test fit and trial. Hopefully not long now... |
Won't be long now, bottom mold for the J hook version is being laid up right now!
Next is pull the proto, test fit on Nineball's car and go for production! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1400715732.jpg |
Great news Todd, how long from the J hook to the roller style for later cars?

Hi toddc,
Do you have other carbon products for the 911? would it be ok to ask for a photo/s and cost please? Thank You, Karaya |

I have several different parts available in CF or fiberglass for the 911's. Most can be found in various threads here. Rather than derail this thread feel free to email me and I can put together a list for you. Thanks, |
Thanks toddc!
|

proto top skin in natural amber fiberglass and proto J-hook bottom frame complete and ready for test fit, fixing on a model...... I'll post up some pics later today/tomorrow after primer dries. |
Todd, keep us roller latch guys in the back of your mind. I am very interested in one for my 87.
|
The long awaited J-Hook bottom frame is now finished. I'm moving into the test fitment phase now and am looking for a couple different vehicles to verify fitment on.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403635051.jpg
