No front spoiler question

My '84 has a front spoiler but no tail. After reading the thread about having both or none at all (from the factory) I want to remove the front spoiler. I notice in the '84 sales brochure that the spoiler-less cars have a small, black, shallow spoiler-like piece under the front. Anyone know for sure what should be there on no-spoiler cars? TIA.

There's nothing under there except the steel guard that was installed to protect the front A/C condensor.

Unless you are driving at very high speeds the air imbalance doesn't make a difference. I doubt there is anyone on the board that could feel the difference in back to back tests at 100 mph.

When hitting the brakes aggressively at speeds north of 120 it starts to become really noticeable. If you are in the habit of hitting the binders hard at those kind of speeds you need to get a rear spoiler.

In other words: Unless you have noticed a problem just leave it alone.

Thanks for the replies. Here are a few brochure photos showing the smaller guard (?) in front of the AC condenser. I like the balanced look of both or none at all, no other reason for taking it off.

It's always better to have the front spoiler, rear spoiler or not, from an aero perspective. What you don't want is a rear spoiler and no front spoiler.

Keep the front spoiler on the car.....

Not sure everyone is using the same definition of Spoiler. In your pictures you have under the bumper the front valance and the AC condenser guard bar. Neither of those would be a spoiler.

Do you have something more than that on your car? Perhaps a rubber lip that attaches to the front valance? That would be the normal spoiler for a turbo or a car equipped with a rear wing type spoiler from the factory.

If you want to get it looking like the picture, no problem, if you are talking about taking more off than what's there, your AC cooler will be at risk without the bar and your car will look goofy without the valance.

In the brochure photos, it looks like a small spoiler, maybe because it's clean and black. But what you are actually looking at is this, which is a metal bar that surrounds the a/c condenser:

The rubber spoiler always gets damaged , if you drive the car on real roads and tracks! Especially is you lower the car as so many seem to do. A spoiler is not cheap to replace and if it hits something at speed will likely take the valance with it.
I removed mine recently and it really improves the looks , IMO. I don't have access to 160km/hr corners , so I don't need it! btw it's not for sale - and anyway the PO removed the centre section for the reasons above.

I don't know how relevant this is, but the 996 does not come with a front spoiler, only a retractable rear one. Is it possible Porsche knows something we don't?

Thanks, I think this answers my question as to what that black thing is in the brochure photo. Yeah, I'm going to keep my chin spoiler in case I someday decide on trying a rear spoiler on my car. Both or none at all is my personal preference.

Not at all relevant at all since we are talking about an 1984 Carrera here and not a 996. Two completely different cars. You might as well compare the 1984 Carrera to a Ferrari 355.

However, if I'm not mistaken, 911s did come without front spoilers from the factory as do 996s.
