Whata do about rust?

Hey guys,

Here are a few pics of some rust on you car. This is the only rust on the car (that I can see)... What should I do? I will eventually repaint the car but thats not in the near future.

Shout I sand it, a little body filler, and get the closest paint I can find and do the spots.
Or would that look even worse?

You might want to post in the paint and bodywork section ... i'm sure there are some very knowledgeable people who can answer that !
I have a few spots on my car that i have learned to live with ...

Not sure. I just dont have the cash or time to paint the whole car. Just wondering if I can do a patch job that will look better and prevent the rust from spreading.

Sanding and filling with bondo will pop rust in a year or 2. (Bubbles) And your metallic paint is tough to blend.
If I were trying to fix it, I'd take off the sealing strip metal at the top of the door. Cut the rust out and weld in patches and then prep the door for paint. Then I'd go to a good painter and have them paint the door due to what looks like metallic paint on your car.(Solid color I'd do it myself)
Or go to a good body and paint shop and have them do it wth new metal.
Remember, Rust is like an iceberg, you can only see the tip!

Another option is to swap out the door with a good rust free one and have it painted.

If you are adventurous, you can "spot" grit blast and completely eliminate the rust. I've done this before for spots like you have. Obviously, you need to remove the trim and protect the glass.

Blasting is an effective way to kill rust like this. I'm not a professional, but I wouldn't go cutting and welding for this about of rust.

This is definitely a possibility but you must remove the metal strip and inspect closely. Rust spots like that don't appear from the outside nor from outside the metal strip--they have their origin underneath that piece of metal and that's where the iceberg is. Once you remove the strip, you may need to cut and weld or, if you're lucky, you won't have to. Regardless, I can almost guarantee you have a "situation" under there. Bottom line, remove the metal trim and post some pics if you still have questions about the best route to remedy the rust.

The body ridgidity is hurt by rust on the lower frame and front suspension. Door rust can wait but you should investigate the rocker panels and front suspension areas and rear suspension. Most 911s are driven to handle so don't assume this is the only rust.

I have had a lot of work done to the car in the past year. Tie rods, shocks, bushings etc... and the guys working on it have not mentioned any rust. I have also look pretty close my self and have not seen any more than whats on the door.

I will pop off the molding tonight and try to post a pic or two.

Seymore, this is my experience...

The front was worse and the suspension was not stable. I had the car stored for several years so it just kept rusting. I am in Ohio where salt is the main stay of citywork crews so rust is constant if you drive in winter.

Wow thats a little larger than mine. It looks like it turned out beautiful. You do good work. Im not that skilled. Im hopping I can just use my drimel, a little body filler and some touch up paint.

If you decide to dremel and touch up, I would advise you find a way to treat the upper inside of the door and the areas you clean up on the exterior, with a rust converter treatment like qurox from certified or similar, then fill the cavities and paint

I think you are way better off than some of the horror stories that are being posted.

Your's is an 82. DG624 does not post his car year. His could be a 74. They melt if you throw salted popcorn on them.

I can help you with door rust spot ideas and I can make it easy on you.

I am not certain of the level of work you want to put into it though so I hesitate to write stuff down as it takes time to be thorough.

Edit - Most of what I am thinking has been mentioned above.

I didn't do the work...done by a local body shop Yoke's body shop. They are very good and reasonable prices. I have an 86 that was driven in the salt.

Wow. Shut my mouth right up. Hopefully seymore's car has been based in the DC area. I still don't think he has major cancer.
