CV joint inner boot clamps

Hi all,

Rebuilding my CV's, confused about the inner CV boot clamp (where the CV boot meets the axle). When I took the shafts out there was no clamp on the boot with grease all over the axle shaft where it was seeping out of the unclamped boot.

Is the how it was from the factory? (as in no clamp)

Any harm in adding a clamp here when I rebuild them with new boots?
Anyone know what size would fit?

I own the "special" $75 crimping tool for CV clamps, bought it years ago for another vehicle.

TIA.

CV Boots

I just did this job last weekend. Pelican and many others sell the boot and flange together which should include the pre-installed boot clamp. You will need the clamp or you will end up with grease all over your trailing arm again. I would also recommend putting them on the small end of the boot as well as I have seen those leak grease when the get old.

Plastic zip tie works good on the small end of the boot.

I got 4 of these from Pelican, but they don't have a clamp on the axle side, just on the CV side. Correct??

nope it requires clamps, you can use metal ties, they hold up better or get the properclamls and use pincher style cutter to install it for $12-14 at a local hardware store

CV Boots

On the small end of the boot you can use an aftermarket radiator hose clamp. You can pick up a box at Kragen/Oreilleys for 3 or 4 bucks. I can send you a pic of my rebuilt axles if you need one.

Good Luck

Bob

Zip tie work well. Metal screw type hose clamp could unbalance the shaft I was told by respected Porsche wrench. YMMV

I used the metal screw type hose clamps as the provided crimp clamps did not fit on my shafts. I never considered the fact they may unbalance it but the shafts are quite heavy I dont see it creating much of an issue. Ill most likely change them now out of fear though.

Regards
Dave

The fact that Porsche does not balance the shaft rotating assy., or that the OEM clamps are by no means balanced, ought to give some idea as to the validity of the statement posted by "the respected Porsche wrench".

Zipties have worked well for me (5 yrs and counting on my current boots).

As DRACO pointed out, you dont need a $75 special clamping tool The cutter tool pictured will work perfectly for the application. I use the same tool when reinstalling the OEM clamps.

Dave, you have nothing to fear, but fear itself...

I was told in another thread that a smaller OD (inboard side) clamp is not necessary as it is a means to relieve pressure. I just pulled my clamplees boots and they seemed to be sealed well. I love the idea of a plastic tie wrap though.
