Weird door lock problem
After an enjoyable drive I locked my car as I normally do with the key. When I pulled the key out, the lock mechanism came out with it. I just pushed it back in and it hasn't came out since, but I know that wasn't normal. Is this a known problem and how do I fix it? I tried searching, but couldn't come up with any solid results.

would be good to know more details about the car.
on most of these cars, there is a screw that holds the lock actuator onto the lock cylinder, it turns as you turn the key in the lock, the only way the lock will pull out of the handle/door is if the screw has broken or loosened up (completely). you need to take apart the inner door panel, you'll find some loose bits rattling around inside the door, I suspect.

Has the lock been replaced or re-keyed that you know of? I just replaced a door lock actuating rod, but I haven't heard of the problem you describe being common. I'm curious what you find.

This handle has the same lock as a 911 (just a different door handle - 914). You can see the screw on the end of the cylinder that holds the key lock barrel into the handle.

Once you get inside the door and see what's going on the fix should be straight forward.
Just FYI if you start cleaning things and decide to pull apart the lock cylinder again to lubricate it, keep the key inserted in the cylinder! If you remove the key the wafers may fall out. When I clean them I use only a light oil for lubrication. C |
