Reuse oil filter.

Hey guys

This will be a first for me. I always change my filter when I change the oil. But hear me out.

I read somewhere that even if you don't drive you car that often, lets say 500 to 1000 miles a year you should change the oil every year.

I am wondering if I need to change the filter just because I change the oil?

Can I just take it off and dump out the old oil and reinstall it? Its almost brand new.

Thanks guys

Change it. Consider it cheap insurance.

change it every time. I consider the Porsche filter to be on par with a Fram. Use Mahle each time.

I ordered one!

I just already have the oil and wanted to change it first thing in the morning and take it on a trip this weekend.

I didnt want to wait until next friday to get the filter.

The filter that's in it only has maybe 500 miles on it. its been worked on a lot the last year

so I just thought....

Don't know of the data to back him up, but a mechanic once told me that with synthetic oils and people that don't drive much he is seeing cheap filters go bad way before the oil goes bad.

here is a change, i change the filter every 3000 miles and the oil every 6000 miles or twice a year, there easy to change and you can cut open the old filter and look at what got trapped in the element. cheap, almost free piece of mind. P.S. never found anything in the filter, always clean. 4 filters a year and 24 quarts of oil, plan ahead now and stock up. one less thing to worry about, drive it

you should not try to save a few dollars this way ....

buy a good quality filter and use good oil .... peace of mind as far as i am concerned ....

there are also other threads about if you can use delo or rotunda oil in the gallon size from a discount store ... and the answer is yes ... just like the answer to your question is yes YOU can ...

if YOU WOULD LIKE TO ... we are just giving you our opinion because you asked...

pelicans don't let pelicans do dumb stuff .....

if you have not looked into it ... take a look at the engine rebuild board ... do it your self rebuilds with machine shop and parts start at about 8000 then since your in there costs add to that running total .....

Steve....

order two filters ..........

I have heard that you can change the oil filter every other oil change but why risk it, especially with these cars the filter is cheap and easy to change just do it.

Regards
Dave

I always put a label on my oil filter with the date of the oil change and tyoe of oil. That's the only way I can remember when I changed the oil....So, a new filter is a must for me or it would ruin my system.

Just take the filter off with full oil tank? Oil doesn't pour out?

no, oil is on the bottom of the tank pull your dip stick and place it in the normal location but on the outside of the tank, that is the level of the oil in the tank.

That's a great idea. I need to find a white marker. On my Suburban I write the install date on new alternators, they last about 5-7 years. I nailed up a piece of paper in the garage with oil change info. on 3-4 cars. Too much to keep track of.
I change the filter every time also and use 15-40 BP, when I was going to the track I used 20-50.

Change it for all the reasons listed above.

On engines that aren't worth much to me I've drained the filter by propping open the anti-drain back part. But these are engines that get run infrequently and it's not worth it on the P-car.

Besides cleaning the oil, my filter also keeps track for me (I do the same with the fuel filter). With more than one car, I can easily get mixed up:

there are 2 issues here:

1. the tiny amt. of old used oil left in the filter (which will be swamped by the oil left in the cooler and lines, even if it was not dumped out)

2. a remote possibility that the filter will be gunked up by being used for an extended time, causing the bypass to open and unfiltered oil to flow thru the motor

#2 is unlikely and if it happens you have a serious problem in the engine anyway; filters with filtrate on them also filter more efficiently than new filters (something you can learn in your chemistry classes) so that idea is a non-issue

bottom line: no big deal

OTOH, why not change it?
