What is this section of a 1973 front signal light for?

I didn't get an answer from anybody on my 6 speed into a '89 Carrera thread, so thought I would post it separately.

Anyway, a question....namely, what does the space in the signal light that the arrow points to actually do? There is no light bulb there nor is there a provision for one.

The lens has a clear section over that part of the signal light housing....I would have thought that perhaps it had a purpose?

Here is the lens....

Having never been near a backdated 911 in the dark, I actually don't have a clue about it....

Thoughts?

Dennis

There was a reply in the parts section where you first posted this question.
It is where the city lights go for the euro model. Your housings are US model so they won't have the socket for the lamp.
Your post in the classifieds:

Yes, I was a dummy and posted to the wrong forum....sigh, some days I feel like my mind is going.

I would have thought that was a place for city lights, but the housings did not come with them even though I bought them in Europe. Now, I did specify a part number to the seller (Van Zweeden...good place for used parts in Holland), it was likely a US number though.

Now I am wondering if I can retrofit a nice little LED in there to act as a city light as I like the idea and the functionality. I do have some city lighting capability in my H4 headlights (once I wire it up of course), but both would be nice.

I fitted LED lights into mine, works a treat. (We need front park lights to be road worthy here and I was using US sourced front turn assemblies. They are sold as side marker white LED lights, I removed the black plastic screw mount and araldited them into position.
