Stereo question: single din 7" flip down

I saw this on e-stray...it seems like it would be a cool non oem option for our cars. Has anyone installed one these? Also, any pics of your flip out, or large screen solutions would be cool.

Matt

For my my purposes, It has GPS, Bluetooth, touchscreen etc and all the new features ....tucks away in dash neatly when not being used.

I'm not looking for strictly oem on all my 911's....

personally, i think you will be wasting your money. the no-name imported junk on ebay is just that - junk. it's not a quality built piece and most likely it won't work properly very long if at all. unfortunately none of the major brands make such an animal. i googled "single din flip down" and would not touch anything from the listed brands.

That's pretty nice... Did you say video recorder? Cool.

Do you have an installed pic?

That's pretty nice. What JVC model is it and how much does it cost?

Yeap, video recorder, I can put it recording mode to record someone behind me, i.e. track day

JVC also makes a full 5.4" 1DIN touch screen but no GPS, but if you have a smart phone it can hook up via bluetooth

in my baby:

it is also my voltage gauge:

NX5000, only refurbs are available, these are NLA current version would be the 5" since exterior GPS are being phased out due tot he smart phones, i think ???

Think I paid $600 for it it has been over 4 years now

Here is a soundstream. Looks pretty cool but big and not retractable. But it does come off and can be used as a portable media player. Fairly cheap too for what you get.

Soundstream VR-931NB DVD receiver at Crutchfield.com

Soundstream VR-931NB DVD receiver at Crutchfield.com

looks like this one may not work.

Installation Tip: This receiver's faceplate is 5-1/2" tall. To determine if this receiver will fit in your vehicle, check the area 6" straight down from the very top of your factory radio. If you don't encounter any obstructions, gauges, or important vents, you should be able to install this Soundstream.

the knee pad will be in the way

Nineball, if you look at the pics and youtube videos it has room and sticks out further than a regular single din I think it would fit great. It would come down about an inch pasted the pad.

Nineball-

I bought a double DIN "imported junk"for my Audi S4 and it works very well. The reason I bought it? the stock Audi RSN-E GPS is very expensive, over $2K when I was looking. Got this for less than $500. Even integrates with my steering controls...

Not saying there isn't junk, but I've had a good experience.

glad to hear it but you are the exception, not the example if i was in the market for one and $500 was my ceiling i would look for a used pioneer avic Z series model. they are quite amazing and reasonably priced when buying used. the only differences between the 4 models available is software, and if you are somewhat adept at finding things in online forums the newer versions can easily be found.

glad it all worked out for you though.

well i don't have one so i can't say for certain but to me it still looks like it won't fit due to the knee pad. i ran into a similar problem trying to install an alpine 7998 which has a 1.5din phantom face. the angles of the dash prohibited it from working once installed, and that looks like it will be the problem with this unit. then again it could work just fine

Respect that NB.....Def "could" afford more then $500, but is it's a balancing act...love the audis, love the 911's, love the bikes....limited $ to apply to all...lol..

BTW, the intent here was trying to find a nice usable screen for our cars. I've seen some flip up screens, but they seem to be difficult to use with our dash. Also, I have an uber smart phone to use, but with this you can stream from your phone, answer calls,
while not straining to see the phone screen....Just FWIW...
