Fuch questions

Been slowly chipping away at a variety of tasks on my 914-6. The spare fuch wheel in the trunk had a terrible rattle can black finish in the center and a really old Dunlop tire with a tube. Two questions.

1) so far two tire shops have told me they don't have valve stems that will work with the hole in the wheel. It's thicker than most wheels and the front face is odd angles so the stems with a nut on the face don't work. Haven't tried discount yet but will on Monday. Anyone else had a hard time with valve stems and 15x6 fuchs.

2). I am stripping a few parts and thought I would strip all the paint off the wheel and leave it raw finish until I had time to apply one of the many low cost option finishes. So I sprayed this wheel with aircraft paint remover from the local parts store. The paint instantly bubbled up and surprisingly didn't touch the factory finish I thought was no longer on the wheel. In addition the silver anodized finish looks awesome after. I wish I had taken a before pic but since I wasn't expecting anything worthy of a post I didn't. The after pic looks great and I'm now wondering what the factory black finish is on 15x6 fuchs? Anodized or some sort of baked paint? This stuff didn't touch the black after several applications. Date on the wheel is 4670. Thought I would share. Thinking about trying a small area on one of the 4 wheels on the car.

Looks great! If you can restore the others on the car to look that good , be happy!

Find someone local that does specialty wheels for the valve stems.
If you edit your profile to show where you are located, I'm sure someone near you will recommend a good shop.

I understand that the original black section on the Fuchs wheels was black anodized. Anodizing, I understand can be done with various colored inks added to the process but I don't know how the black section was done independently from the clear anodizing on the rim. Probably a 2 stage process. First the black with the rim masked off?

Thx guys! Heading down to NAPA for the stems. Agree, if I can get the other 4 to look like this I'll be a happy camper.

Well first off....that is a "deep 6" wheel and not a typical 914/6 wheel. Yes it will fit. They are early enough that running a tube is a good idea. If that spare matches the other four, you have some very valuable wheels. But not a factory option for the 914, though many owners will seek out and use them.

Your 914/6 came with other Fuchs, Mahle "Gas Burners" or steel wheels. The Fuchs could have been 14s or 15s but not deep sixes....the 14s were a "comfort option" and used a taller side wall for a more cushy ride.

If you are new to 914s....stay away from Auto Atlanta and Sierra Madre Collection like the plague.

Thank you for the info. I will pull one of the other wheels and take a look at the part number. The coe states "forged" wheel option and I'm fairly sure this one matches the others - date stamp is correct year. But that said, I do have a receipt from the dealer stating the wrong tire size was in the trunk and it was replaced. Then the weird paint on the wheel, another question. This car had a lot of dealer installed option - wood interior kit, a front air damn (fiberglass that I have seen described as "factory or dealer", rear Porsche lens between tail lights. Everything else is very original and the car was in one family until the last year. Will have to do some digging on the wheels. Here is a pic of the car on the way home - maybe you can tell by looking at the wheels (?). They look like all the others I see on 914/6.

So there is an original 914/6 is on ebay right now. Wheel does look slightly different.

No...the rear reflector was not stock on the 914/6. Added on by a previous owner.

Send me your number via PM.....we can talk. I've owned many 914s. 4 original 6s, a number of conversions and probably close to 20 four cyclinder versions.

Will do, agree the reflector was not a Porsche set up. But I've read some dealers installed these items. This was purchased in LA so I'm assuming a fair amount of "bling" might attract some buyers (?).

The reflector is a cut down 911 piece. The trunk lock mechanism was removed unless a hole was drilled in the reflector. The latch was then operated by either a cable or electric solenoid.

when either failed, which they did on a regular basis, you are FUBARed.....
