still looking for mixture adjustment on 77 targa and wonder what the hand grenade pin is for between the injector boot and the fuel distributor. the diagram calls it a plug but what for???
can anybody help???? |

On my 911Sc it is missing. I think it keeps the dirt,water etc. from clogging the 3mm hex adjustment screw . And the pin allows you to access the plug to remove to adjust mixture.

The mixture is between the injector boot and fuel distributor. It is impossible to see Take off the air cleaner and it is back there. It takes the 3mm allen key. It has to be a long one or it won't reach all the way down

Not necessary to remove air cleaner. A long 3mm hex wrench will slide down along the edge of the boot and into the hole. I don't have a plug in the hole on mine.
The access hole is about where I drew the small circle. |

That "hand grenade pin" is the plug you need to remove, but I have never seen one in real life, most get lost over the years. It doesn't really need to be there, except it keeps unfiltered air (and dirt) out of the system. I wonder how many people out there would never use a K&N filter because it doesn't filter quite as good, but they have the plug missing :-) I have a slightly cut down golf tee in mine. Works just fine.
Go to harbor freight tools and pick up a set of metric T-handled hex keys (allen wrenches) for about $6. They are surprisingly high quality and the 3mm key is almost the perfect length. It takes a little fishing around to get the key started in the hole correctly, but it will happen. Just try to insert in directly between the fuel distributor and the rubber boot, right in the middle. No need to remove air cleaner unless you want to, as posted prevously. I always remind myself, small adjustments make big differences, and it is "Lean out, rich in". |

The hole where the pin should go allows unfiltered air to enter. It's upstream of the CIS meter so the leak doesn't affect running, but the dirt does cause some engine wear. The pins are cheap, get one and put it in.
