Post changing temp gauge from "idiot" to numerical

If I get an OEM temp gauge with numbers to replace my "white line" gauge, will the connections match? Will the sender need to be changed to match the numbers, or will it directly translate? Would it just be better/easier to get an additional VDO temp gauge?

It requires a new sender ... should come in the 'kit' ...
It does, in Pelican's ... PEL-911-TMP-KT1

I don't currently have a numerical gauge. I was thinking of just buying a used one to intall in place of the original one. Is there an "update" kit available? I know the "external" mount VDO gauge does come with a sender.

Pelican, and others, have an update kit which replaces the entire meter movement and dial with a calibrated instrument, and it comes with a new sender:

Thank you warren, that is exactly what I was looking for. Suppose I should have looked in the catalog before asking stupid questions.

if you want to save a few bucks, if you get a flashlight and look off to the side of the current gauge, hidden behind the gauge ring, are the numbers. They are hard to see but they are there from the factory. If you can get them in your head, then the idiot gauge becomes the expert gauge, cause you know and others don't.

I was in the process of converting mine until I found those little numbers, and I mean little. Oh, I highly recommend looking for them when you're NOT driving (almost hit the car in front of me)........duh!

AJ USA has 'em for $65.

The idiot guage works fine for me. The first line is operating temp (194º) the second line is where I start worrying (248º). I will be parked on the side of the road well before it gets anywhere near the red.

Knowing the exact temp does nothing for me. As long as I know it is in the normal range, I am happy.

If it ain't broke.......

emcon hit it right. The old,(numerical), guage is no more accurate than the new,(no numbers),guage. Your guage is calibrated; first thin white line is exactly 90C(194F), second one is exactly 120C(250F). Maybe the factory thought it was dangerous to have people trying to read tiny numbers while driving Porsche fast when safety temp range is all that matters. Not to mention trying to convert farenheit to celsius or vise-versa while driving fast. Maybe they're not such "idiots" after all.

Well my gauge doesn't have any marks...just a square at the bottom...line up to red square at the top. And I looked for the numbers on the side, but couldn't see any.

Cheaper and easier, just print this and put it in the glovebox.

Jeff,

Almost sure your gauge has the numbers. Get a flashlight and if you are over 40, a pair of reading glasses. Look through the steering wheel from a sharp angle and against the rim of the gauge you will see the numbers. After doing this you can either remember the marks or get a small label machine and put them on the gauge.

Take the money you just saved and go out for a nice dinner!

SO I finally checked the numbers on my gauge and they are

60C or 140F
90C or 194F
120C or 248F
150C or 302F

the reason you often need to look is ....not all gauges are created equal

Got a question for some of you regarding operating temperature on a 2.7. Please refer to Bill's picture of a numerical guage for reference as it is the guage that I have.
Ive got a 2.7 with Webers, early heat exhangers, no cat, free flowing muffler. My operating temperature never reaches over "180" on that guage, even under heavy traffic and under load on very hot days. My usual temp is about 160 on normal driving and optimum weather. Is my sender or guage accurate in reading this? I have read in previous discussions that their operating temps reach about 200 or so. Im worried that the guage is not showing an accurate number and that the temp is actually higher than what is showing. Thanks guys.

Elfer, I suspect your gauge is not accurate. 180 degrees fahrenheit is probably the bottom of the normal operating temperature when your 911 is warmed up. My 2.4 will run from 180-210 depending on how hot it is outside.

I would just like to note that on my SC (imagining all the SC temp guages are the same) the gauge does not have bars to go by. There is a cold range block, a normal range line, and then a red zone block. Also the normal range seems smaller in the SC gauge than the earlier 2.7 gauge.

For what it is worth during normal driving my temp gauge reads right on the border between cold and normal. Guessing this will be 190F since that is when the trombone cooler/thermostat will open up.
