Picked up an SC in Utah and Drove Her Back

Found and '82 SC advertised in Excellence.com which seemed under valued by a few grand and immediately jumped on it after an hour conversation with the owner. I broke all the rules, bought the car sight unseen other than the pics on Excellence. Yes I felt a bit ill at ease sending a check to a person I had never met in another state, which may or may not have a real car. What sealed the deal is was speaking to the owner, a retired Air Force officer, who is associated with a university and worked for fortune 500. We talked for over an hour and I quizzed him on what was wrong with it for such a good price. His response is that the hood shocks were shot. I just about fell over. The deal was done.

I told a younger coworker about flying down to Salt Lake City and driving it back to Washington and his reaction, was he would sure like to go. I asked him why not and in 10 mins he had a ticket on the same flight. We got up at 3:00 AM on Friday and caught an early flight.

We arrived in a grey cool (38*) SLC and were picked up by the owner in his SUV. We drove an hour to his house and he provided bottled water for the trip. Had to be one of the nicest people I have had the opportunity to meet. He lived in a beautiful house in a nice neighborhood which were all good signs. His wife served us a wonderful lunch, we packed our 2 small bags in the front after he gave us an extra set of 6's and 7's and a car cover.

We split the trip into two 7 hour days, driving from NW Utah through Idaho, Oregon, and finally Washington. The weather varied from sunny, to clouds to freakin downpours. Here a few pics of the trip.

Threatening skies before a major downpour which slowed us to 40 MPH

And by the way - I absolutely love the way this car drives. It's solid, handles well, has leather 89 sport seats, and is a very comfortable way to haul in the miles. It did have some minor flaws most of which are already corrected, but the motor is strong, the tranny is great, the body is straight, and all is good.

Nice purchase! It seems now, if you don't break the rules, someone else will. If you want a SC or Carrera, better get one now!

Sounds like a great trip, and a great score. Those pix of Eastern WA sure look like Lewiston/Clarkston...?

Nice story. I always guessed that by the time the magazine was on the shelf, anything that was in the classifieds was probably sold already. More pics please.

Yes, but no car bra.
It sounds like a fun sort of vacation I wouldn't mind doing myself.

Nicely done sir! Unbelievable purchase. I will have to check out your cream puff soon. Hopefully you will have the hood shocks replaced by then

I'm due for another far away purchase-retrieval project. Threads like this make me yearn for a nice SC/Carrera for the street.
