Ready to instal the windshield and just noticed that I forgot to pre-mark the mounting holes on the A-pillar for the ViN number plate before covering them with material. So I would appreciate if somebody would measure the distance between the top of the dash and bottom of the VIN plate.
Also, which way is the plate oriented?
Facing the windshield?
Or facing towards the passenger side?

Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Johan

I can also report that the oil leak has now been fixed thanks to the advise received in the 911 Engine Rebuilding forum particularly John Walker's Workshop. Got to love these forums!
Car is now approaching completion and I hope that the weather warms up here in central Ontario soon to do a real road shakedown.
More pics soon.
Cheers,
Johan

Just curious, how'd you fix it?

Hey Shaun, thanks but no need to measure. Jonny042 was kind enough to email me a pic this morning which helped me zero in and I fortunately found the original holes by poking through the perforations with a needle.
Gotta love this forum!

Johan

My intention was to have the RST roadworthy with 600 miles under its belt to be ready for the 10 hour drive to the Hershey for th April 16th Porsche Swap Meet. But about 10 days ago it became evident that the long range weather forecast did not look good for getting the roads in central Ontario clear of sand and salt to be able to do the necessary shakedown. So, regretfully, I decided to back off burning the midnight oil to finish the car. Truth be told, we are currently in the middle of yet another snow storm that will be around until this weekend. I'll just have to make do driving our 997S to Hershey instead- not a bad alternative!
Most of the heavy interior work is now finished. Of note is the headliner which I unpacked and carefully hung to release the fold marks immediately after I purchased it from a fellow Pelican over two years ago. I started to instal it but aborted after it was evident the the fold lines would not disappear even after stretching. So much for purchasing an item in its original package. I had to wait for a new one to arrive from our host, and I'm glad I did. Nice German quality.

Much has been discussed here in this forum about glues and adhesives. I have bought and tested several and settled with 3M Super Trim Adhesive 08090 to be the best stuff for stiff square weave carpet and headliner. It sticks, can be moved and repositioned. Anything else from 3M and some other we'll know manufacturers simply did not cut it for me. For small areas I sprayed some adhesive into a small container and applied with a small brush.

My friend and I attempted to instal the rear window last week. We were unsuccessful so yesterday I had the pros do a house call- it took two pros and my help three hours of hard pushing, shoving, pulling and swearing to set both the front and back windshields in. And that was after I had laid in the aluminum mouldings and put the seals on the glass. Who said this was DIY? Anyway, I'm happy with the result.

[

More in a few days.
Cheers
Johan

All panels fitted except for front valance. What a job. Generally happy except that the sunroof transmission gave in and the driver's side frunk hinge is not cooperating after wrestling with its alignment for three days. Now hunting for a new hinge and sunroof transmission on Pelican.
Some pics after the first day of color sanding.....

Getting closer.
Cheers
Johan
PS No rear quarter Windows installed yet as yours truly has misplaced (aka common occurrence these days) the 5mm tap required for the pop-out hinges!

Hi Johan,
Are you going to install a standard style dash top? I'm just waiting for mine to arrive from Lakewell, but didn't think it was possible with the windscreen installed.

Paul

Paul,
Early dash-tops a problem, I believe. My dash-top is from an '86 which does fit with the windshield in.

Color sanding, polishing and wax now complete. Took almost five full days to cut through the hard very cured three year old Glasurit paint. Pretty happy.

Beautiful HID headlights supplied by fellow Canadian Pelican FOZZY.

As for the front parking lights, they are ill fitting badly made reproductions bought some five years ago from SM (before I knew better). Had to grind and file extensively to just get them in the fender cavity (and I'm only showing the better side!). Not happy but it will do for now. I'll have to replace them in time.
More soon.
Cheers,
Johan

Such a great color - what's the paint code, please? I was going to go with GT3 orange (8C6), but this looks less intense and more vintage.

Looking great Johan!!

I've spent quite a bit of time with this area on my car and am on the second set of signal lights and still not settled, and also the second set of horn grilles.

I can't tell from the pics, but If you're less than happy with the horn grilles (ie, are they the same tasker metal products cheapos that sell for $60/pr and don't fit worth a damn) I can highly recommend the much better ones made by Auto Foreign Services. At only $85.00 each they are a great value IMO.

Shaun, your kind comment means allot particularly from a professional restorer.

Ferrino, color is Signal Orange from circa '72 911. see bottom of page two...
Color Codes - Porsche Paint Cross-Reference - page 2 of 35

Jonny042, Thanks Jon. It's mainly the parking lights that irritate me. As far as the grills are concerned, I have nothing to compare to in my neck of the woods. I plan to attend the PCA/UCR annual picnic in July so I'll be inspecting some original examples for comparison and then I'll make my mind up whether to buy new parts.

Cheers,
Johan

Speedometer Sensor

I'm almost there with the build but my speedometer does not work so can't pass safety test for licence sticker.
Read threads in this forum with no positive results.
Here is what I did.
Checked wiring into speedo ('86 based).
Speedo jumps immediately when the green and brown wires are touched together at the rear of the tunnel with ignition on.
Checked continuity of same wire connectors.
Disconnected wires at tunnel, put my digital ohm meter across the green and brown wires all while turning the right rear wheel. No movement in the reading.
Removed the sensor at the transaxle and ran a small magnet (the one on the end off the small extended handled mirror) across the sensor. No movement.
Did the same thing with the large magnet on the back of my magnetic parts tray, finally a 0.00 ohms reading.
Checked the seating onto the transaxle. All good.
So I'm wondering if the sensor is missing a piece on the sensor side. There are two arms that just stick out on the sensor side that appear to be to hold something that is not there. Also the inside of the sensor has a yellowish compound filling that looks unfinished. See pics

Any ideas?
Any suggestions would be welcome.
Cheers,
Johan

I have to admit I have zero familiarity with this circuit, but the pictures of the sensor I found online look the same as yours so I don't think you're missing a piece of the sensor. However, I did notice the sensor seemed to be listed for years 76-84, so maybe you have an incompatible sensor?

Also, passing a magnet past the coil of the pickup should create a small voltage pulse, not a change in resistance (I think). Again I am not familiar, so it's possible Porsche designed it to emit a square wave 12 volt output and you're on the right track.

Hope you can get it sorted soon - you really need to find a more agreeable mechanic!!

The RST hits Pavement

Well, after 5 years, I'm happy to say that my resto-mod project is filnally coming to a happy conclusion.
The RST finally touched terra firma this afternoon with the initial objective to drive it back and forth on the driveway to help settling the suspension. However, I was so frigging impressed with its handling and stopping prowess on the driveway that I divided to drive it around the block.
Didn't know I had so many neighbors aware that a new sound had just passed by........

Stay tuned. I'll have more pics in the coming days,
Cheers,
Johan
