When I put mine in I think it only goes in one way. It will go in both ways, but the clip only works one way. I was concerned that cleaning it wasn't good for it as it sure was gunked up.

Or you could write your own: "Solid Gold Porsche" would be appropriate!

Well, speedo does not work with the sensor in the right way, i. e. With the two prongs facing the differential. So next I'll try with it in the 'wrong' way.
First water. Then lots of caressing.

Aimed the headlights. These are HIDs from fellow Pelican FOZZY- man, these are really bright, as bright as our 2010 Audi and the 997S. LED board parking, marker and signal lights are from fellow Pelican Spoke and they are also really bright. I can finally see and be seeing at night.

Cheers,
Johan

Finally got the RST safety checked and plate sticker today. I'm now legal on the road.
Speedo still not working so I'm going to reverse the wires to the sensor (can't hurt) and if that does not work, I'll reverse the sensor. I've run out of logical ideas.
I keep getting these stupid teething issues, the latest one being that both rubber donuts popped out of the camber plates while driving on smooth pavement. Rubber appears good but quite frankly cannot understand how they are supposed to stay inside the camber plate with the shock constantly pulling on each rebound. So I have posted this as a separate thread hoping that I can garner a wider audience for a solution. Here's the thread:
Donut Strut Mounts (front)- Need Lesson
Cheers,
Johan

I pulled my drivetrain 4 years ago to rebuild my gearbox. Everything worked before pulling. After rebuilding the gearbox, I put everything back together. To my surprise, everything worked except my speedo. I even drove it with my cell phone taped to the speedo with a speedometer app running while troubleshooting.

I went through the same process as you playing around with wires, replacing as much as I could. I figured, I pulled the drivetrain, I obviously did something wrong putting it back together, the issue has to be at the rear of the car as that's the only portion of the circuit that was touched. After reversing the speedo pickup, reversing the wires, doublechecking there were no breaks in the wires running from the pick up to the shift coupler, but I saw nothing.

And to add to the confusion, my car is a ROW car. When I bought it, the speedo was still metric. About 6 years ago, I found an English speedo here in the classifieds with like 50 miles on it. So at that time, I pulled my metric speedo out of the dash, and pulled 1 wire at a time and put it on the English speedo. Both worked. When it stopped working, I wondered if it was the English speedo, so I swapped it out for the metric one, neither worked.

Out of desperation, and to check off all boxes, I pulled my speedometer out of the dash and double checked the wiring. It wasn't as it would have been stock, even though it worked before taking the car apart. So I rewired it using the wiring diagrams, took it for a drive, and it worked. Still haven't figured out what happened, but it all works now, so I don't care.

Hallelujah
Speedometer works!
Solution was to reverse the sensor at the differential.
This way speedo does NOT work....

Reversing the sensor so the two prongs face out works...

BTW the retaining clip is not Porsche standard issue.
Cheers,
Johan

Getting the rubber donut back into the camber plates proved to be challenge.
We first tried to presse it back in with a large vise and when that did not work, we moved to a 20 ton press with the same result. The top lip simply expanded so it wouldn't go into the hole. So, my new hero Brent, who is a heavy equipment mechanic, went old school and wrapped a wire several times around the waist of the donut, stuck the wire ends thru the hole in the camber plate, twisted some screw drivers onto the end of the wires to be used as handles, jammed the camber plate into a large vice, and pulled like hell working the wires around the upper lip while I pushed by counter levering a crowbar from below. Key was to get a small portion of the upper lip partially up the hole. And then, Voila! The rest made it thru with ease.
lots of grease.

Car is back on the road and running fine. Need to finess the toe in.
Cheers,
Johan

Yay!!! Below is an excerpt from "The solid gold Porsche":

"Wait a minute, I know that it's possible to put the sensor against the transmission backward, somebody already warned me about that, but obviously the potted, raw looking side of the little cylinder goes against the gearbox and the finished metal side faces outward, right? Wrong. I'd spent a month trying to troubleshoot a perfectly good speedo with the sensor on backward."

Really glad you got it sorted, Johan.

Jonny, how I wish that you had read the book earlier. I would have had a additional 1,000 km under my belt.

Anyway, car is running well but as expected teething problems crop up. Latest are power door locks don't work and I'm missing the slip ring that goes under the steering wheel so my horn is currently hot wired. Anybody have a spare slip ring (911-347-099-05)
Cheers,
Johan

I should have a slip ring that will work, assuming the SC is the same part number.

Johan,

So happy to see that you were able to save the body and turn it into what it is now! Excellent thread and documentation too. In case you're looking for some final touches, we just revamped our Accessories section. I'm sure that you're going to be getting into another DIY project and I hope that we're able to help out with it! Best of luck.

Jon, thanks for the offer. I was fortunate to find one quickly locally.

Now, my least favorite subject......that is after electrical issues is oil leaks!
First one was the leak at the crankcase seam previously posted in this thread which was fixed with JB Weld- still holding.
Then came the turbo oil leak so I naturally took the most pragmatic route and replaced it with my spare refurbished unit. Well, turn out that it was two cap screws at the end of the left camshaft that drive the scavenger oil pump. You can read more about it in this thread...Turbo Rebuilds- need lesson
Now I have developed an RMS leak which I'll fix once the snow comes. No other leaks or even oil sweat in the usual places.

The tire rubbing took some time to solve. I first presumed that the reason was the 205 tires that we're giving me grief so the inside and edges of the left fender had an abundance of green masking tape to locate the rubbing. When that did not show anything, I started to look at the wheel bearings and 930 brakes/rotors that I had modified to fit the 3.2 based suspension. Again nothing. So today I had another look while rechecking the toe alignment and there it was a telltale edge of bare metal on the A-arm. When the steering wheel is cranked full left, the rotor just skims the A-arms at he front by the ball joint. End of screwdriver.....

Other than that, the beast is running great. Can't wait to go past 4K rpm once a have a few more miles on her.
Cheers,
Johan

Got caught in a heavy rainstorm so I took the opportunity to make final adjustments to the brake bias with the adjustable brake regulator.

Luckily I missed the hail to the south.
Cheers,
Johan
