Thanks guys for your encouraging comments.
I haven't posted any progress on the RST for a while as I had to deal with a radical prostatectomy in November. My recovery has been great-I'm pretty well back to my old self after only six weeks- an early Christmas present I say!
In preparation for the post surgery recovery, I revised my build program and moved a number of projects to the basement as my nurse ( wife) warned me that I would not be allowed into the coldish garage until the new year. So there has been some progress-I'll be posting some pics in the new year.
Season's Greetings to my fellow Pelicans. Hope that you all have the chance to be close to family, friends and your P-car during the holidays.
Cheers,
Johan

Glad you are recovering well. Rest up though. I over did it after my surgery and ended up with a damn hernia - second trip to the doctor for another zipper.

All the best.

Get well soon!

Thank you for posting great details on your progress. My son and I are working on an '83 SC and have benefited from this thread immensely.

thanks fellas for your good wishes. Feeling 100% and all systems are now a "go".
Some work in Progress in the basement.
Had to install the hood crest to remind me of the finish line....

Cleaned up the rear windshield that had popped our during the crash and miraculously survived including all the defroster wiring having slid 100 feet on the grass. Installed an new rubber gasket and ionized trim.

Recovered the '86 door pockets with leather trimmed square weave from Autobahn. Yes, I like my door pockets to hide my crap and keep the interior tidy.

The stiff square weave was surprisingly not that difficult mold around the bottom corners.
I also attempted to recover the dash with leather which turned out to be a total screw-up so I won't show you that!
More later.
Cheers,
Johan

Speedy Recovery Johan,
I'm loving your thread as I try to tie down the direction I'm going with my 87 Carrera backdate.
Oh Ya, you're right. My first car was a 70 Spitfire and it was very slow but also the most fun I've ever had with 1300cc's

Hey Steve, by coincidence, we lived in Vancouver for five years in the late '60's where we had both the XK120 and the Spitfire. I both worked and vacationed in the Okanagam. The XK was a delight up those long mountain roads especially with the top down. The Spitfire on the other hand came to its own so to speak on the downhill twisties.
Backdating your '87 would be a great project. I would be more than happy to share all that I have learned during this journey.
Cheers,
Johan

Just got my custom badges from Kyle at Rebadge.
Rebadge
Just had to lay them on the deck lid.
Pretty happy with the quality.

Johan, just noticed your thread. Very nice work, I like it a lot. I mailed out the retainer rings for the steering rack yesterday.

Been busy moving the wiring from the wreck to the RST. Quite a chore as I had to open up the roof and tunnel by cutting the body carefully and bending back to avoid messing up the wiring which was pinched in several places. Lots of repair work. Tunnel tube on the '78 RST is a smaller diameter than the '86 so I had to disassemble the harness and pull the wires through one by one-still very tight.
Anyway, I'm almost ready to test the circuits but need some help with the brake switch for the cruise control which was damaged beyond recognition in the crash. I plan to make the L-braket that holds this switch....

Can anyone give me the dimensions of the L-braket and a pic of where exactly it is placed by the pedal assembly? Would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Johan

Switch Bracket

Hi, Johan
Is this the bracket you are looking for?

Cheers, Tom

Tom,
Thank you for taking the time to post the pic. I think that your pic must be of an earlier year than my '86 as my pedal base in different in that the bracket is separate. By chance I went through the Bentley manual and found this pic from which I can probably get more or less the right proportions for the L-bracket.

However, my pedal cluster does not have any holes for its fitment, the backside of the floor board does not have any evidence of holes, and the tunnel portion of the wreck is so crumpled that I can't find any holes there either. So I'm still at a loss.
By the way, the Bentley manual describes the switch as a "clutch switch" whereas I believe that it's supposed to placed to operate with the brake pedal. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Johan

This cruise control thing has been bugging me so much that tonight I revisited the wreck and the slightly damaged pedal assembly and finally, after cutting open the tunnel a bit more, figured out that the switch for the clutch fits inside the tunnel, as evidenced by two studs protruding from the centre floor pan. The '86 uses the brake light switch as the brake signal. The tubes inside the tunnel appear to be placed differently in the '78 so I may still have a few issues with obstructions.
Cheers,
Johan

Door Handles

My friend Peter kindly made me a replacement plastic sleeve for one of the door lock tumblers with his new 3-D printer. The right one is the new one. Note the three small teeth at the end. Fitted perfectly. Amazing. Now I'll be able to lock/unlock the passenger door.

Got the door handles and triggers chromed. These are from the '86 wreck so they are not more proper "early" ones which I understand would have entailed new door mechanism, etc.

Got myself a 917 key as well

Cheers,
Johan

Johan,

I have the cruise control switch out of my car of you are interested. Mine is a 1985.

By the way, it is a clutch switch. The brake switches feed brake signal to the cruise control module if I recall correctly.

SpyderMike,
Thank you for posting. That is exactly the pics I'm looking for. If you still have it out, would you be able to take a pic of each plane of the bracket with a ruler beside it so I can get all the measurements? I note that one of the studs inside the tunnel lines up with the accelerator pedal base holes which is good to know.
Thanks again.
Johan

Here we go - let me know if I missed something you need. My offer still stands, if you are interested in the one I have let me know. Just pay shipping.

Mike

In this first picture - the 1 inch mark is placed at the center of the bend - I get about 4-3/16":

At this picture the end of the tape is at the end of the bracket - I get about 1-11/16" to the center of the bend :

In this picture the 1 inch mark is aligned with the edge of the bracket - there is about 1-1/16" flat at the switch and 1-1/4" across the base including the strengthening flange:
