need advice

I am trying to help out my girlfriend. She inherited a 1981 SC. After installing a fuel pump, flushing the fuel tank and replacing a bad brake line I started to change the leaky valve cover gaskets. Upon removing the lower valve covers I found 10 out of 12 lower head studs broken. After removing the engine w/the help from friends I purchased Bentley's Porsche manual. After disassembling the engine down to the case I successfully removed all 12 lower studs. However when I disassembled the engine I separated the pistons from the cylinders. They are Mahle pistons & cylinders. Is there any way I can re-ring the pistons and reinstall them in the cylinders? The odometer reads 112,700 miles but the cylinders look brand new.

Did you mix up which cylinders go with which pistons?

A new set of rings is OK, but check the end gap is within spec at different points within the cylinder (this will almost certainly be OK, as you note the cylinders often look new.) The more important check is the ring grooves in the pistons, slide the rings into the pistons and check the wear. The top and second ring are the most likely to be worn. No point re-ringing an engine with worn piston grooves, they will wear rapidly. If both these measures are within spec you are good to go. I did a light flexi hone on my barrels for the new rings, bedded quickly and been great ever since.

damn, 10 out of 12 broken studs must be a record of some kind.

he must not know that new guys must post pics of girl friends......or was that cars?

me, i would send the cylinders to be honed, heads for a valve job, rockers to be rebushed and cams to be polished.
