Good news everybody!
Full articles at the links- Porsche to return to Le Mans 24 Hours with new LMP1 car in 2014 - Le Mans news - AUTOSPORT.com AUTO RACING - LE MANS: Porsche Confirms Factory LMP1 For 2014 Excerpt from the Autosport article: Porsche will return to the Le Mans 24 Hours with a full factory LMP1 prototype in 2014, the Stuttgart-based sportscar manufacturer has announced. As the event's most successful manufacturer, the company has not been represented in a works capacity in the top class at Le Mans since 1998 when Porsche claimed the last of its 16 outright victories with Allan McNish, Stephane Ortelli and Laurent Aiello in the 911 GT1. It has retained a strong presence in the GT class since then, however. President of the Executive Board at Porsche AG, Matthias Muller, said the company had always intended to return to Le Mans as a factory team and had been waiting for the right time to announce its intentions. "Motorsport was always an essential part of the Porsche brand," emphasises Matthias Müller, President. "So for us it was only a matter of time before we returned as a factory to the top league of racing. "Porsche's successes in Le Mans are unrivalled. We want to follow up on this with the 17th outright victory."

YEA!
It is long overdue. I suspect Audi will drop out and let Porsche run against the rest. I doubt we will see Audi & Porsche go head to head in the top class.

Maybe some hope for Audi v. Porsche in LMP after all???
Posted on AudiSport facebook page: Audi's statement on Porsche's Le Mans return: "This is the decision of Porsche company, a decision in which Audi is not involved. Audi relishes the prospect of every strong new opponent at Le Mans and in the new FIA World Endurance Championship. Porsches entry into the LMP1 class is evidence of the high level of attraction of sport prototypes." Audi Sport's Photos - Wall Photos | Facebook

a lot can happen between now and then but that is damn good news..... I hope it is not like "bentley's" return - they won leman right after they came under the VW umbrella and then went away again

2014 would be the 911's 50th Anniversary. so hopefully its gonna be a 911 LMP.

...also, I loved the ALMS Porsche/ Audi battles under Penske. It really played in Porsche past history of being the light weight alternative underdog, winning at tight tracks. I think that dynamic fell apart when they started beating the big strong Audi at a top speed/ horsepower track like mosport however. ( making it up on the infield and giving it back on the straights would have been more of what I expected to see. That earlier in the season was very exciting racing !) I admit I'm an old curmudgeon dinosaur but I have zero interest in diesel or hybrid race cars. Especially at this level of competition.
Hopefully the Porsche LMP will be neither of the above, but I'd bet otherwise. Gotta make the politicians and environmentalists happy.

With all the development Audi has undertaken over the years, and with the merger of US road racing next year, I just don't see them downscaling their operations cold turkey so as to avoid a squabble with Porsche. I mean, they already have competed against each other in GT for years, so why/what would change in LMP1?
