speedo repaired, Rebuild but doesn't work - any input appreciated ,

Hi - '86 3.2 -
I Have just had the speedo repaired plus repacing the new electronic sensor cable and it still does not operated.
I have rechecked the wires to it and their position is correct.

Thanks for any info on what could be causing this .

"Horse"... not sure if there is a "speedo puck" that plugs into the trans on an '86 but if so, perhaps that is not seated correctly.

make sure sender is installed with the plastic face towards trans and the waxy face outwards.

+1 as stated above, my buddy placed his on backward, but prior to correcting it, we removed it then I waved a magnet over it, speedo bounced, confirmed good, placed it on correctly. Bingo problem solved.

Thanks everyone for your input... I'm away at the moment but on Monday morning I'm going to have a look at the 'puck'
Paul's Speedometer' Repairs in Rondondo Beach was highly recomended so I had him overhaul the speedo so I'm confident that it's not the problem - I just got it back so most likely I've installed the 'puck' backwards-

I'm also going to wave a magnet over it like your friend did Jim while I have it off - Easy way of checking to see if there's no problem with it prior to reinstalling it ay...Good tip Jim - Thanks
Cheers

which side of the puck should you pass the magnet over?

Hi Guys- At the moment I have her jacked up and the puck out of its socket- When I run a magnet over the 'waxy' side the speedometer dial does move a tad...When running it over the indented non waxy/ side of the puck it doesn't react.

I could drop the car down off of the jack stands and go for a drive but being I'm not using it today I thought that I best see what you guys think first - Jim...Do you happen to remember what side of the puck that you passed the magnet over to make the speedo react?

I did have it mounted with the flat 'waxy' side out _ Should the puck sit in any particular way in the mount? - Thanks in advance

I would check that the speedometer wires are connected properly. use a multimeter to check that the wire supplying power has +12 volts with ignition in on position. if the bulbs light up, that means the ground is ok (the dash lights use the same ground as the speedo itself).

Thanks...Have power, but I best pull the rear tunnel cover off and make sure that I have the connectors plugged in all the way. BTW, I presume that for the puck to be seated properly it should just sit level in it's mounting point?

OK... The latest as of a few minutes ago:

I re-installed the puck with the waxy flat side out as before - The mounting area was already clean but I gave it another wipe.

I took the rear tunnel cover off and there were no problems with the connections.

I pulled the speedometer and the wiring was correct with 12.5 V (I took photo's prior to sending it to get repaired)...Just came back from a drive and no go- Does anyone have any thoughts on the matter? - Can one check a new sender to see if it is faulty? - Thanks

Magnet over the waxy flat side Brother!

That side would be facing the gear box.

Whoa Jim!...So the flat waxy side is in and the indented plastic side is out?... That makes sense as it was the side that I was able to get the speedo needle to move a tad with your magnet suggestion ...So I did have it in backwards after all...Hmmmm?

I say that Happiness is - I'll now be able to sleep tonight- Thanks Bud!

you seem to be confused as to what the faces are. one face is brown plastic. the other side has a waxy surface and tabs. the waxy side faces out. as shown in the photo and as 3 people have posted. if you have it the wrong way it won't work. just flip it around if it is the wrong way.

Hmmm? - How about a photo? ...Because mine does not work with the flat side out I'm going with Jim's advice '-> photo<- which is having the flat side in.

It appears that others have asked and had this question answered in the past.

Yours should have the two protrusions (tabs) and the indent for the clip to rest on.

In fact, my pic is of an 86 before we removed it to drop the engine.

Indeed it does!- Those tabs now make more sense - Something for the clip / wire to hold on to. Good stuff Jim...

.Re the 'oily' engine photo - I was wondering about that particularly when I know that you have blue LED's that shine down onto your shiny dancing/ shifting shoe(s)

Take care

For any others that may be as confused as I was in regards to which way it goes in, as Jim stated, the side with the large 'plastic tabs' face out-wards.

Thanks again for all your input ... While it was jacked up I pulled the left rear wheel and replaced the #3 head heat sensor - Happiness is now knowing again the correct speed in a school zone

Here is a photo of the heat sensor installed
