Why no locations?

Why don't people add their location? Even just the state would help. We have some really talented people on this site and some of the builds are amazing! I really enjoy reading the stories and progress, but also enjoy seeing where people are living. Seeing some of these cars in person would be wonderful or connecting locally with people of similar mindset would be great. Perhaps it is just me as I have moved around so much in my life and enjoy meeting new people. Anybody else feel this way?

Some people, myself included, prefer some anonymity...especially in this age of social media. I am considered a social media Luddite because I have never had a Facebook account. Nevertheless, I am not reclusive and enjoying hanging and swapping stories with like-minded individuals...like with Bob, Kathy, and Kevin at a little place over on Iota Dr. (Insert winky emoticon)

I think along this line as well. However, on this forum, having a location posted is helpful, not so much for seeing cars or viewing first hand builds, but for assistance in repair/diagnostic difficulties. I've seen many threads where someone asks for help, a repair shop, or supplier and a simple glance at their ID does not indicate where they are nor do they specify in the thread. In addition, having the location lets those who the live in area to volunteer personal assistance, a nice gesture that happens quite often. Still, it's a personal choice whether or not to post a location so, to each his own.

Locations can be specifically general...like "Southern NY", or "Massachusetts." At least you can narrow it down a little...
To each his own....

Yes, City or even just State is helpful without too much compromise of identity. And is actually helpful on the parts forums (forii?) when large or heavy parts are involved.

While on the subject of being helpful with no effort, other than updating your profile...
there are those who ask questions about their car but don't identify what model or year. Adding that to the sig line would help stop the, What year do you have?

Yeah, like when stupid Corvette engine swap people hijack the IP address from the computer of your place of business and then plaster your best friend/partner's face all over Pelican just because he has a B.S. prior conviction. And all because they can't handle the Chevy put downs and sarcasm. I can see why nobody put's their location or real name on here.

Location, user info line and signature lines don't show up when using the iPhone view so it is probably best to post it in your question anyways.
I have noticed that posts from my phone don't show my sig line and I only see the user name.

Why don't people add their location?

For the same reason they block out their license plate when posting pics of their car.

Maybe our administrator could make it mandatory that something (location or otherwise) is inserted in that blank at forum registration. I think most people inadvertently leave it blank, or don't take the time to ever really complete their public profile.

Make us do it? I don't think that's a good idea.

No one can "make you" do anything over the internet. All I am saying is that it could be one of the fields with an asterisk beside it---insert ever how much or little as you like.

I seemingly live near No one I did meet a fellow pelican who was passing through as air cooled cars stand out in small towns midwest.

I just live vicariously through the Chicago clan or St. Louis. Yeah I like the idea but would never ask someone who's uncomfortable. But they might also look over their shoulder every time driving home to hope no one knows where they park it either. I've had cars stolen, but chose not to let that dominate my enjoyment of cars.

In a perfect world the title of the thread would include year of car and concise (2-3 word) description of issue being discussed.... as for privacy, if a troll-geek really wants to get your info they will, simply by you posting. It's not that hard to figure out someone's general location by context alone.
