Looked in the Performance Products catalogue and they had a device that supposedly protects your two front towhooks from being scraped through, particularly on a lowered car, when they hit a driveway lip or whatever: $50 for four pieces of metal and six bolts with which to sandwich them onto the towhooks. I bought four fat, two-inch-diameter washers and two nut/bolts. Through-bolted them onto the towhooks so they extend about half an inch below the lowest part of the towhook. Total cost about 50 cents.

Another negative about the Performance Products gizmos, is that they require drilling to install. This reason alone keeps me from purchasing them.
Also, I'm not sure what your protecting are "tow hooks". I believe they are just skid plates. They aren't used for towing, are they? Maybe I'm wrong on this. |

I put 2 1/2" rubber wheels on my front tow hooks , just a shoulder bolt thru the hole and a wheel from a common castor. this provides you w/ a noiseless transition on steep driveways. About 10 bucks from home depot

I believe the so-called "tow hooks" are used for securing the car during transport. Their design intent may have been to also supply a sacrificial lead-in low point. I’m liking the bolt and washer design, though. It’s much easier to get replacement parts, and much easier to feel okay about sacrificing. Heck I might even splurge and buy stainless steel washers. Thanks for the tip Stephan.

I think I'm going to attach a cool-collar to my scraped up tow hook. It will increase it's surface area, and will radiate the heat buildup due to friction.

I only bottomed out the car once before I dummied up. Grunch!! But I like Jerry's idea with the rubber wheel. I'm gonna go down to the HD and check them out. And the cool collar idea might work too. At least it's in the air-flow under the car.

I was thinking about doing this also but my spoiler may reduces airflow to that area. I could get one of those fender mounted oil cooler thingys to drive more air to the tow hooks to guard against overheating.
