taking molds from a 69T shell and popping a carbon graphite 911 shell out of the autoclave that weighs a couple of hundred pounds and then adding a mid engine RSR motor setup.... don't paint it - let the CG weave show through the clear.... plexi windows tinted to match the CG color.... maybe with 993 headlight and front fender shape... |

My dream 911 would be a combination of the best of the original 60's 911 design, combined with the best of late 90's air-cooled, normally aspirated technology. It would go something like this...
69 - 73 coupe tub, stripped, lightened, strengthened, steel RS / RSR flares, ceramic brakes roll caged, aluminum wherever possible - doors, lids, etc, plastic windows, minimum street level interior, NO frills allowed(i.e. radio, A/C, etc), Fuchs wheels, or Jack's version for proper width Then ADD... 3.8 Liter Cup car engine, six speed G50 tranny RWD ONLY Target weight 2000 lbs, Target power, let's hope for 400 Then try to make the whole car look like a 73 RS / RSR. What a blast it is to dream like this. Like being back in HS again... Thanks, Wayne, great idea..;) |
Wow, everyone dreams big here. I think it would be cool to buy a rusty 914-6 or early 911 roller and rebuild it using all Pelican parts. It would save a P-car, generate plenty of technical articles or another book to expand our knowledge base, and you could use your employee discount to save money on it (you guys get 5% off, right?).

How about this:
Start with a Galvanized middle-year 911, backdate to early bumpers etc (like Jens' car) and then fit a 2.8 MFI RSR Spec motor with Warren's "Airport" geared 915 with 7:31 LSD trans. RS or SC Guards, 16x7" & 16x9" Fuchs with painted petals, A032R tyres and 22/28 torsion bars with adjustable Konis. Fit an S or RS front spoiler, a ducktail and a muffler with twin centre exit pipes. Then, paint the whole deal in 993 "Vesuvio". |

Uphere in the woods of NH at my shop the P/D Clone is where its at...built off a c4...in process, waiting for snow and I will race the wifes WRX up to the ski lodge. Now if I could clone the TT,watercooled,ride hieght etc...

Without going to extremes, Curt's '88/3.6 car comes to mind. Sure it isn't as lightweight as an early car, but you get a G50, long nose look, galvinized chassis, and a coke and a smile. Not a bad "compromise" for the real world...
But if we're dreaming, 959 Dakar setup. Or hell anything setup for offroad. I guess I've been watching too much rally tv... |
961 would be interesting, but to do it justice, you would need to start with a C4, and while certainly doable with an unlimited budget, would be real expensive. Start with a less expensive base car, you can put that extra cash into the engine.
I have nothing against RS/RSR/IROC clones, (really like them in fact) but there are a lot of them around. not quite from scratch, but in the newest motor trend there is a article on a 550 spyder replica made by beck. it looks pretty cool. says you can get one without engine, transmission, and front suspension for under $15,000. or a 2160cc 155 hp turn key version for under $23,000.
I would go for some kind of 550, I just love the classic styling. I also love that boxster propaganda video I got in the mail a couple of months ago w/ the old man that woke up from a coma and the 550 and the young guy in the boxster. |

I agree with you - something light like the 550 beck spyder with a real Porsche powerplant. Maybe a 2.4 S or similiar - high revving flat six - 220 or so HP 1400 lbs... And you could do it without mortgaging the house. Sort of a poor man's lotus. I think that's the way I would go... |

<b>BODY</b> I'd find a galvanized donor body and turn it into a '73 RS. I'd take it back to bare metal and polish and treat the panels so it looks like one of those chrome scale models, or one of those polished-aluminum Audis! If I did it myself, it'd probably look like a DeLorean! :D I'd experiment with decals, but it might look better without them. Also, I'd probably fit an F1-style undertray to the bottom of the car. <b>ENGINE</b> A flat-8 from a 908; MFI or EFI; Megaphones. The fitting of this engine, I think, would necessitate the removal of the rear seats, and as a result, it'd become a mid-engined car. <b>SUSPENSION</b> Coilovers and a custom made multi-link rear-suspension system, which should make it handle as well as a 993; big-ass sway bars.
