Build From Scratch - What would you create?

I've been thinking seriously about building a dream car from scratch (if I can ever find the time). Thinking from 1965 all the way up to 1998, I'm trying to come up with the ultimate car from both a performance and vintage perspective.

Now, twin-turbo performance aside, I think that I would want something that was semi-vintage looking, yet not lacking in performance. Something unique too would be very, very cool.

Reliability would be vital too. The 2.7RS would be a natural thought, but a lot of people have done this.

So, I think I came up with the ultimate: a 1974 3.0L RSR Replica. Anyone out there done this already?

Wayne, turbocharging aside, a lightweight 3.0 RSR Replica would be awesome.

However, I'd probably go with the latest techno, largest capacity factory engine I can get a hold of (3.6L) and work that sucker extensively. Maybe a 3.8L BIG Bore kit, TWM Throttle Bodies (trumpet style), Motec Injection, lightweight internals, blueprinted & balanced ;)

Wayne,

There is a God!!!

Sorry, I got a little carried away.:D

Wayne,

If you are going to go, go whole hog...

917 Longtail....

You COULD outrun the CHP radio with that puppy.

I was thinking a tube frame 550 spyder (Beck or similiar) with updated porsche mechnicals - maybe a high revving 2.4 or 3.4L

Or take a 1990 or so C2 (which you can get for cheap these days) strip it to the bone and install a 3.8L or 4.0 L bomber of a motor! coil overs, fiberglass doors and fenders and big rubber...vroooooooom.

I guess if I was in California - I would want to keep it to 1973 or below... so here goes.. How about this?

Porsche RSR 1973 This ex-Richard Petty, George Follmer IROC race car won the 1980 Trans Am event at Road America driven by Monte Shelton. Full, no expense spared. 1998 rebuild with 3.5-liter "High Butterfly, dyno-tested engine. Close-ratio trans, high performance. $175,000

With a little literary license on your original question, here is my “built from scratch” 911. It would be the ultimate Q-ship.

1.) Pre ’73 body. Coupe with sunroof. Rust free, and properly prep’ed, of course. A/C is optional.
2.) A 3.2 with injection, massaged to increase power and reliability, but must have smooth idle and reasonable muffler. Fender mounted oil cooler.
3.) Stiffen body to taste, Bilstein shocks, sway bars, etc.
4.) Lowered with bump steer kit.
5.) No tail.
6.) Roll the fenders and mount black centered 7”X16” Fuch’s with rubber as wide as possible.
7.) RS door panels.
8.) Black paint with black trim. No bright work anywhere except the polished lips on the Fuch’s.
9.) Black interior. Early Recaro Sport seats, or aftermarket look-a-likes if originals are not comfortable to your build.
10.) H-4 headlights with 80/100 bulbs.
11.) At least upgrade to S brakes or Big Reds if budget not shot.
12.) 930 steering wheel is a must.
13.) Stereo is optional.

Should be capable of staying with most of today's ricer's and yet too flashy! :D

Wayne,
The '74 RSR is one of my favorites too, but I feel that the proper 917 type center lock wheels are essential to the look. However nobody ever does the wheels correctly. However now there seems to be an option for these wheels.

http://www.jongbloedwheels.com/910wheel.html

Yes this is a 13" but apparently Jongbloed will be making larger diameters. You'd need 15" to be accurate but tires would be hard to find. Perhaps he can make a set of 16" ot 17".

I'm down with that. When you find one let me know.
I would settle for a 934 though

Bill Verburg 08-02-2002 04:57 AM

RSR exterior, 3.8 liter N/A sportcams, regeared 6spd, semitube frame, 964 RS interior(assuming this is not a race car), coil overs all around, 964 3.6T brakes all around, some nice light Kinesis, Fikse or Lindsey Fuchs, 9&11x17 or 18 It would look something like this

Only streetable, In Calif you probably need to start with an early belly button tub due to the emissions laws.

Joeaksa 08-02-2002 05:03 AM

Ted,

Wayne said "build from scratch" .... no need to find one, just start welding.

Joe

cstreit 08-02-2002 05:07 AM

How about a 904, 6, 10 replica with a big honking motor!

Ted Stringer 08-02-2002 05:11 AM

Joe,

I ain't that good with a welder. I have to start with something predone.

Kemo 08-02-2002 05:27 AM

73 coupe
3.6L motor
7.31 gearing (might come with the car)
H4's
993 interior
Windshield with antenna built in
Ducktail (ala mark wilson)
RS Body (Flares, Bumbers FR & R)
Ruf Wheels (if you can find some)
Ruf Side Mirrors
SC Outer Rocker Panels
NO Chrome Anywhere
Triple Black Paint or Audi Nogaro Blue
Carrera Script and bumper stripes in Charcoal Grey
Suspension setup for aggressive street, lowered to a nice level

I trust you to make any upgrades and improvements from there...

Overpaid Slacker 08-02-2002 05:43 AM

Give me an "Arrrrr!"

Wayne -

John Cramer and I were discussing this very issue on Monday night, and the result was a 911R clone. 210hp out of 2.0 liters in an 1800 lb. car -- that would be very very cool.

You could check the "Unique", "Vintage" and "Set World Speed Records" boxes. I know that last one wasn't actually listed as one of your criteria, but I assumed it was implied.

It would have to be white, though.

Best,

JP

550 replica running "full house" 3.6 SmileWavy

724doorE 08-02-2002 06:00 AM

1. 908, 910, 917... all with tig welded Al frame and early mag blocks slpiced into flat 8's or f-12.

2. 50's-60's era special with tube frame independent susp. all around, small block ford and 5spd trans. Oh and a hand beaten Al body of my own design to hopefully mix all the best features of a few of my favorite cars into one. No AC, radio, heater, wipers, etc,... just a race car with plates....:D
