Remove the axles and then the four engine/trans mounting bolts - the weight of the motor will disconnect most other fuel/electrical/vacuum lines on the way down.

Seriously though, this is a job I tend NOT to rush - I probably take a good 5 hours to get the engine on the ground, working slowly to avoid missing anything (like that pesky front of the engine EFI connector).

Tim Walsh and I once took one from in-car and running, down to the crankshaft, in 4 hours flat. This was with hand tools and no engine stand. If memory serves, we took the motor apart on the tailgate of his pickup truck.

Try a 77 Turbo w/ac and see how long it takes. There's to many variations but a good normal would be 1.75-2.25 hours.

911 Engine drop time
 
Usually takes me about 2 hrs, half on top, half underneath. Installation is about the same, maybe a tad longer. That is on an SC engine w/CIS injection. Also, I'm not trying to beat the clock, just working at a steady pace.

I've done it in 2 hours on my SC.

But that's (1) leaving the gearbox in place, and (2) I had only reinstalled it a few days before, so everything was spotless, no frozen bolts or surprises, etc.

Yet to do it on the 911, but need to in the next few weeks to do the clutch.
My beetle I could do it in 20 minutes, only hampered by the difficulty in balancing it on the jack.

My Chrysler (Mitsubishi) '77 LB Lancer rally car I got it down to 15 minutes. The exhaust manifold was usually still too hot to touch when the engine was on the floor.

The old XF Falcons I could remove the engine, replace the sump and rocker cover gaskets, rear main seal and front seal, and have it back in the car in less than an hour. But when I was in the trade I used to do at least three a week.

I think Fred's method looks like the safest to me, as you do not have to balance Motor/tranny on single point of the jack, hi on the air...

this is just my opinion, hey guys please correct me if I am wrong...

Sorry, I should explained my intend in the first post.

What I am trying to establish here is the safest-fastest way to remove Engine or Engine/tranny together method...

You all guys awesome!!! LOT of experience...

The first time I did it was 2 hours but I took my time. The second time with a hoist it took an hour.

I've had mine out a couple of times. First time took a week, the second time about four days. So, that's my record so far. Getting it back into the car was harder.

and I thought 2 hours to drop a G50 3.2L carrera was fast including all the looking for tools time. Sheesh, 22 minutes for a GT3 engine . Takes me that long to change the oil.

do not feel so bad, as people here in Key West FL (keys) say: "what takes average person day to do, we do it in the a week" :D ---- I love Keys... it most southern point of US, tho.. where, friend of mine has a website about it ... Florida Keys Vacations but this for another thread... :rolleyes:
