What is the fastest drop Engine time did you guys have?

What is the fastest drop Engine time did you guys have?

I understand if this would be 4 cylinder it takes less time or it will be more time for large dressed one, and Carbs vs MFI... but I just want to see the time for general reference. I see the Pelican thread shows 10 hours

Don't be that impressed. The RSA is a track car, so there is not a whole hell of a lot to disconnect.

2 hours removing on a 77 sc (had a bit of problems with the drive axle nuts)
engine went back in in about an hour.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps1a1d5bb2.jpg

We did however have a 2-pole bridge, a pallet lift and worked in pair,
each person for one side disconnecting and reconnecting.

Daves911L 08-08-2013 07:14 AM

Takes me usually a little over an hour on old carbureted 911 street cars. About 45 minutes underneath, and 20 minutes up top. That's actual working time, not including finding tools, jack, oil pans, etc. which never seem to be where I left them. Getting all that stuff rounded up takes longer than the actual work!

timmy2 08-08-2013 07:15 AM

With my mid rise lift and having drained the oil the night before and laying out the tools while it drained, about 2 hours to have it on the ground. Working by myself, 2nd time dropping it.

JeremyD 08-08-2013 07:17 AM

I've removed, fixed a clutch fork placement (separated transmission and engine) and reinstalled in around 4 hours by myself...

I was motivated to finish it before my wife woke and went to the garage in the morning... ;)

dporsche74 08-08-2013 07:20 AM

they pop right out and in .. under a hour. once you know the sizes and tools needed

CCM911 08-08-2013 07:35 AM

All hail the master!!!! That is really fast work.

jpnovak 08-08-2013 07:49 AM

I usually average about 1:20 including jacking up the car and draining the oil. These drivetrains come out of the car quite easily.

In fact, I get to practice this Sunday morning on the 71 targa.

Josh D 08-08-2013 07:53 AM

Did my first one in 4hrs.

That's from running/driving to motor and tranny out, solo, using floor jacks and jack stands (no lift).

Tippy 08-08-2013 09:22 AM

My fastest is 1.5 hrs.

1-ev.com 08-08-2013 09:39 AM

I guess on the race car - no heat exchanges, no A/C etc, interesting...

1-ev.com 08-08-2013 10:01 AM

Nice pics!!! what kind of forklift is it? is it on the way of rear "bumper"?

I bet my guys, at my shop back when I was much younger, that I could get the engine out of a, I think, '71T, in 17 minutes. It took me 21 - had trouble with the upper starter bolt (trans remained in the car). Time started with the car on the hoist, toolbox in place, but no tools out of the box. Time stopped with the engine on the floor jack, and pulled out from under the rear of the car. Also included oil removal.

1-ev.com 08-08-2013 10:34 AM

here i see someone done it in 15 min http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/136781-balancing-engine-atv-stand.html#post1049756

Dan J 08-08-2013 10:59 AM

Racing a GT3RS in Grand Am at Watkins in 2001 we blew a cam seal next to the oil tank
in practice Engine out, fixed, back in in 22 minutes for qualifying on a sheet of plywood
in a dirt parking lot It was Nascar weekend and Grand Am got the dirt lot

CCM911 08-08-2013 11:14 AM

Dan, was that a soft-drop, or a full drop?

Dan J 08-08-2013 11:20 AM

Full we had to take off the oil tank

Chuck.H 08-08-2013 12:07 PM

Remove the axles and then the four engine/trans mounting bolts - the weight of the motor will disconnect most other fuel/electrical/vacuum lines on the way down.

Seriously though, this is a job I tend NOT to rush - I probably take a good 5 hours to get the engine on the ground, working slowly to avoid missing anything (like that pesky front of the engine EFI connector).

Tim Walsh and I once took one from in-car and running, down to the crankshaft, in 4 hours flat. This was with hand tools and no engine stand. If memory serves, we took the motor apart on the tailgate of his pickup truck.

kodioneill 08-08-2013 12:25 PM

Try a 77 Turbo w/ac and see how long it takes. There's to many variations but a good normal would be 1.75-2.25 hours.

911 Engine drop time

Usually takes me about 2 hrs, half on top, half underneath. Installation is about the same, maybe a tad longer. That is on an SC engine w/CIS injection. Also, I'm not trying to beat the clock, just working at a steady pace.

1-ev.com 08-08-2013 12:56 PM

What do you think guys?

#1 leave engine and jack-up the car would be faster?

#2 or Dropping Engine is faster?

Thank you,

McLovin 08-08-2013 02:11 PM

I've done it in 2 hours on my SC.

But that's (1) leaving the gearbox in place, and (2) I had only reinstalled it a few days before, so everything was spotless, no frozen bolts or surprises, etc.

SteamWolf 08-08-2013 03:21 PM

Yet to do it on the 911, but need to in the next few weeks to do the clutch.
My beetle I could do it in 20 minutes, only hampered by the difficulty in balancing it on the jack.

My Chrysler (Mitsubishi) '77 LB Lancer rally car I got it down to 15 minutes. The exhaust manifold was usually still too hot to touch when the engine was on the floor.

The old XF Falcons I could remove the engine, replace the sump and rocker cover gaskets, rear main seal and front seal, and have it back in the car in less than an hour. But when I was in the trade I used to do at least three a week.

fred cook 08-08-2013 03:21 PM

About 2 hrs.

I think Fred's method looks like the safest to me, as you do not have to balance Motor/tranny on single point of the jack, hi on the air...

this is just my opinion, hey guys please correct me if I am wrong...

The first time I did it was 2 hours but I took my time. The second time with a hoist it took an hour.

Jerome74911S 08-08-2013 05:03 PM

I've had mine out a couple of times. First time took a week, the second time about four days. So, that's my record so far. Getting it back into the car was harder.

1-ev.com 08-08-2013 05:04 PM

Brian, nice car :-) and nice work too

yelcab1 08-08-2013 05:08 PM

and I thought 2 hours to drop a G50 3.2L carrera was fast including all the looking for tools time. Sheesh, 22 minutes for a GT3 engine . Takes me that long to change the oil.

1-ev.com 08-08-2013 05:19 PM

do not feel so bad, as people here in Key West FL (keys) say: "what takes average person day to do, we do it in the a week" :D ---- I love Keys... it most southern point of US, tho.. where, friend of mine has a website about it ... Florida Keys Vacations but this for another thread...

Pete, I remember that story. Didn't you have to buy everyone lunch or something? Still was impressive. Oh to be young again.
